i have a couple questions..the past few days i have been having a lot of back pain...it doesnt go away when i walk or sit or change position. its very annoying....sometimes its on and off sometimes its consistant but its been getting very uncomfortable and sometimes it just makes me want to bust out in tears because i cant get comfortable... i was at the doctors monday and i was a fingertip dilated and 50 percent effaced. so i dont know if that really means anything. But anyway..i heard stories of women having back pain and not knowing it was labor. how do i know.. if it is labor my water will break eventually right? What are some labor symptoms everyone experienced?

  1. gratz you gonna be holding your little one soon.

  2. You can have labor pains in your back.. you should go to the ER and make sure. I have some labor pains and went to the ER and they told me you are only dilaited to one and you will prolly go home,  well eight hours later I have a baby boy.

  3. No, the dilation and effacement at that stage don't really mean anything except that your body plans to give birth in the somewhat near future.  Could be a month away.

For the back pain, try stretches...google the yoga position "cat pose."  It worked great for me!   Or check out the simple video here:

Yes, it IS possible to do this pose when 9 months pregnant.  I learned this in my childbirth class and it was a lifesaver for back pain!!!!!!

If it is labor, you will know because you will have the strongest menstrual cramps you have ever experienced in your life.  And, no, your water does not always break before birth or on its own.

Which is why in childbirth classes they show you the knitting needle--like device they like to break your water with to hurry you along...beware, since when they break your water, labor comes harder and faster than it would naturally.  Modern hospitals do not allow labor to progress naturally anymore.  But that is an answer to another questions and I digress....

  4. My mom had back labor with me and basically the only way to tell is to time the spasms/pain spurts. Is it a constant pain at the same pain level constantly? Or is it bad mostly, but worse at other points? Record the times when it gets worse, and if it is a few minutes apart. Either which way, i would go check with your doctor again, and let them know you might be having back labor, but you're not sure. They may want you to come in and get checked again.

  5. Labor contractions felt like a charlie horse in my stomach.  Then it happens again and goes away in timed intervals.  It's like spasms.  You're water may never break.

I have severe back pain right now (21 weeks) and had it the whole time with my son.  My doctor later told me it was because of a tilted uterus.

  6. the baby is pressing against your nerve. i had severe backpain during labor an know how you feel. no your water not always breaks, you should call your docter

  7. It could definitely be back labor. If the pain gets worse every few minutes, you should start timing the pains just like contractions. I never had traditional contractions with either one of my kids. It was always back labor. How far along are you?

  8. with my first baby i was actually hospitalized a few times for back pain that was so severe i did break out in tears...i was sent home the first time becuase it wasnt labour but the second and third time it happened i burst out crying and begged for them to do something because i couldnt take the pain..tylenol was NOT cutting it...i was 17 and my dr was convinced i was just nervous...i was placed on sedatives the first night and spent a few days getting morphine injections every three hours...when the baby was born i told them labour was nothing compared to what the back pain had been like...i have looked into it and the only possibilities i seem to have found ove rthe years is that it was a.caused by the baby being in a posterior position and putting pressure on b.was actual back labour that wouldnt progress on its own as my child was born far more overdue then they originally thought. or c.baby was pressing on my sciatic nerve...nurses speculate but no one knows to this day, all i can say is if you cant take it MAKE them do SOMETHING! no sense in trying to be a trooper when its pain like that..

  9. You'll get a much more informed answer by calling the hospital, asking for a nurse in the maternity ward, and asking her opinion about all of your concerns.

I had a lot of back pain with my pre-labor pains.

    Good luck

  10. it sounds to me like u are in pre labour...this can last days but sometimes weeks..i had the exact same thing an for me i was 40wks when it started an i had my baby at 40wks and 5 days..so depending on how far along you are....

the night i went into active labour i used clarysage oil in a burner it stimulates contractions..might want to give it a go, worked for me :-)

    good luck
