Question:

I'm getting prank called. How can I try to solve this?

So, it happened about fifteen minutes ago, but this isn't the first time it has happened. The person knows my number (obviously) and my dog's name, which suggests they know me. The number is withheld. I can think of one old 'friend' who might do it, although I have asked her and she said it wasn't her, but she isn't very trustworthy. Unfortunately I struggle to recognise voices on the phone, so I wouldn't have a clue if it was someone I knew. It's one of those messing around prank calls, asking to speak to my dog, all that kind of stupid thing. It doesn't sound like much, but it's unnerving because I don't know who it is and they know me. It has also happened in the early hours of the morning before.

The only solutions offered by our phone company have been to block the number (using a code) but this only lasts less than a month, or to block all withheld numbers, which costs. And I don't see why I should have to pay out because of it...

  1. The prank caller is probably just trying to get a reaction out of you. Have you ever thought about getting an answering machine? They really don't cost that much. That way you can let the machine take the message (and you can hear it), but the caller won't get any reaction from you. After a while they'll get tired of not hearing you answer the phone and getting the reaction they want. If it's one of your friends, once you hear who it is, you can answer the phone.

Also once you have their message (s) recorded, maybe you can play it over a couple of times to determine who is prank calling.

  2. Yes, this is harassment!

Call your phone company and complain again!

They have to tell you the process.

Usually they make note of the complaint, and send you a form to fill out.

Then you have to contact the PD, and file a complaint with them. Get a copy of the report.

Your phone company should request a copy of the police report. Also you will need to a sigh a paper that you will prosecute that person calling regardless of who it is.

Then the phone company will monitor the calls.

The big thing to remember, “IS DON”T TELL ANYONE YOU  HAVE THE PHONE COMPANY MONITORING YOUR PHONE, somebody can and will tell the wrong person.

  3. Just hang up quicker than they do, start ignoring the caller for awhile by telling your other friends to use two rings-hang up- and call back again so u can identify who is calling you.  OR when they ask to speak to your dog...just say, "Hang on, I'll go get him/her....and leave it off the hook for as long as they hang on!
