I'm getting ready to convert my 04 Ranger with a 3.0 non-flex-fuel engine to a flex fuel engine with one of those conversion kits. That way I can save money at the pump and my amber engine light won't come on because it thinks the engine is running too lean. Can anyone tell me which is the best company to buy from? I found four companies. Flex Fuel Gold, WhiteLightning.net, Change2E85.com. and FlexFuelMyRide.com

  1. Those conversion kits can be pricey, and take a lot of time.  BTW, all of the sites you listed sell the FFI products.  Their home website is,

    http://www.fuelflexint.com

The websites all appear to be the same, in that they contain pretty much the same layout, sections, products, and information.  Some have testimonials though.

For $360, that's a lot of fuel.  With the current difference between gasoline and E85 prices combined with the drop in mileage, you wouldn't make it up until after buying at least 4000 gallons of E85.  A 2004 Ranger could probably go 60,000 miles on that...  you wouldn't see a return for years.

But, if you mix a gallon of E85 with every 6.5 gallons of E10, you should get E20.  Or you could add your own ethanol to the tank to make E20.  Your Ranger should be able to run on E20 without any problems (or conversions), and this is supposed to be an optimal mixture.  It's also an easy thing to test.

  2. Before you consider such a decision, calculate the amount of gas it would take to make up in costs.
