  1. depends are you male or female

  2. St. Mark's Basilica is impressive, but you have to remember to dress properly for a church -- covered shoulders & no short shorts--or they won't let you in.  The Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square) is also a good place to just walk around and feel the atmosphere, and the side streets leading away from the square have lots of shops for tourists to browse in.  You can also climb to the top of the campanile (bell tower) in the square and get a great view of the city.

An easy/inexpensive way to see the sights is to take a vaporetto (water taxi) up & down the Grand Canal to see the palazzos and famous bridges (Rialto & Accademia).  You can also take a gondola ride from St. Mark's Square.  Gondolas are the traditional way to get around, but they will be more expensive than the modern vaporetti.

If you have time, the outlying islands of Burano & Murano are less congested and good for shopping for lace (Burano) and glass (Murano) and you can watch these products being made.  The island of Torcello appears almost abandoned, but its Byzantine church has some impressive gold mosaics.

If you like art, the Accademia is a good place to see traditional Venetian painting.  The Guggenheim museum has a good collection of modern art.
