  1. Everybody (even your friends) were beginners oonce.  They won't laugh at you, or if they do they are pretty useless friends.

The best thing to do is have lessons every day, and practice what you are taught.  It is a bad idea to let your friends teach you.  They almost certainly have bad habits which youu do not  want to learn (everybody has at least some bad habits), and a trained instructor will have drills and methods to get you going faster than friends would.

  2. there is nothing like an on-the-hill lesson, but you can at least get some ideas from one of the instructional DVDs out there. My favorite is Breakthrough on Skis by Lito Tejada-Flores.

it would also be a good idea to get your legs and core in shape before you go. best standard gym equipment is probably a stationary bike, of if you lift you can do squats and some core stuff.

    good luck

  3. The other guys say your can't learn until you get to a slope; pretty much true. Some ski stores have a moving  downhill carpet arrangement which teaches the feel and basics quite nicely; if you don't mind paying the price.

If you wait till you get there, you will find ski slopes are very beginner friendly in giving lessons (future customers!). You definitely want some lessons.

In the meantime you can do some leg exercises which help tone up muscles. Just do all directions you can think of (leg lifts from front and back, side lifts, inside (lower leg ) side lift(cross your leg and use the top leg to support you for this one), and of course lots and lots of knee bends.

  4. Hopefully you live close to someplace that has a ski area. Go there and take a lesson.

If you live no where close to a ski resort....you will be laughed at. Sorry.

Looks like you'll have to get lessons ON your ski trip.

  5. Don't worry.

You can't practice it without snow. Its not even snowing in our country. You said that your friends are going to laugh at you. Well, they weren't born with skiing ability. You could ask one of your friends to show you the basics. If you are going to make mistakes, you can say that its your friends fault because he/she didn't show it correctly.

  6. yes you are going and you are going to learn it

  7. Everybody looks like a clutz on their fist go.

Get a beginners lesson. DO NOT let your friends tell you "it's easy...come up the chair with us!"

They won't be friends long, as you will end up walking down the entire mountain. I have seen this at least every winter...some poor soul follows their boyfriend or girlfriend up to the top...and they can't get down.

Get those beginner lessons...they are fun, and you may meet new friends there. Then toodle around on the beginner chair for at least a day practicing those turns.

The second day start on the beginner chair, see how things feel, and you might think about getting a second lesson, to advance you just a little more. Who knows, if you are athletic, you might end up skiing "blues", or intermediate runs, before your trip is over?

  8. Sign up for lessons at the area before you arrive.  Try on line or phone.  Many areas offer a beginners package of lessons, lifts and equipment that should allow you to ride a lift and negotiate a slope with confidence.   Friends  seldom can teach a friend to learn a skill and remain a friend.

  9. your friends are jerks if they laugh at you... and you are an idiot not to laugh at yourself! What's it matter if you can't ski? One time or another your friends didn't know how to ski either and they looked ridiculous too.

Being able to laugh at yourself and at situations is a great thing! don't let your friends be the judge of you. Be the judge yourself. If you are really that self-conscious watch some instructors video on YouTube.com maybe you can find a tutorial session that you can do without the skis or the snow.. it's all about balance. have you ever gotten on rollerblades? because it's almost like that. If you can glide on rollerblades then you can ski on snow.

Don't worry about your friends laughing at you! and anyways, if there is a cute guy there and you look like you need help you can always ask him to train you. Vice versa if there is a cute girl there you can always get her to train you. It'll be cold too then you got someone to warm you!

GOOD LUCK! HAVE FUN! DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE LAUGHTER! LAUGH AT YOURSELF FIRST AND LEAD THE CROWD!!
