I'm going sailing for the first time: what are the most important things to know and what should I wear?!?

Learn where the boom is.  It is called the boom because that's the sound it makes when it hits your head on an accidental jibe.  Learn the tacking and jibing commands the captain uses (no one really says "ready about. . .hard a lee", usually it is "ready about. . .go").  This will let you know when the boat is going to turn across the wind, which causes the boom to go across the deck--remember to duck.

Wear a swimsuit with a shirt on top. If its warm and sunny take off the shirt.

Wear sneakers or bare feet or white soled shoes. Its possible you will get wet with the wind blown water.

Sun glasses. Sun screen. towel.  Only waterproof watches allowed?

Wear a life-vest (specially if you aint a good swimmer), trainers (so you wont slip on the boat), jeans or some comfortable trousers, shirt , bring a jacket (can be windy/colder on open water) and WATCH the lower mast (dont know what its called in english, the one that swings from left to right if you change position and come in a different wind direction), cos that will sting if it hits your head :-) and dont trip over the ropes!

Wear comfortable light colored, light weight clothes. Take a hat that ties on. Take sun lotion. Wear shoes with rubber soles(white) . Take a jacket . Wear a life jacket, not belt.

Wear comfortable shoes with non-skid soles. The deck gets wet. Don't wear shorts and take a windbreaker style jacket. Be sure to wear sunblock. If your hair is long, you'll want something to tie it up in a ponytail or use a clip.

The thing you have to watch for is "coming about". When the wind direction changes, the captain and crew have to move the mainsail and the boom can knock you over if you're not aware of it.

Take some Dramamine along, just in case.

Remember to keep all your ropes in order Jenna, water dont hurt, watch your head for the boom coming across, listen to your skipper, remember to take food and drink, if you got room take both a light and a heavier waterproof jacket. But also plenty of warm layers.

1.  Each boat must have at least a Helmsman aboard who has the proper rating and has been checked out for that type of boat by a qualified member.

   2. Light-Weather Helmsmen and Advanced Light-Weather Helmsmen are limited to sailing in Light-Weather conditions. Heavy-Weather Helmsman and above are limited to sailing in Light-Weather or Heavy-Weather conditions. No member shall take out a boat in more severe conditions.

   3. Members shall provide a life jacket for each person in the boat. Each member or guest who has not taken the club's swim test shall wear their life jacket while sailing.

   4. When the water temperature is below 55F (13C) all members and guests shall wear life jackets while sailing. The wearing of life jackets is strongly recommended when members and guests are sailing in Heavy-Weather conditions.

   5. When the water temperature is below 50F (10C), for members to sail, there must be at least 2 boats on the water, and all boats must be within hailing distance.

   6. Light-Weather Helmsmen should restrict their sailing to the South Arm of the lake.

   7. Members rated Advanced Light-Weather Helmsmen and above may purchase a key to the boathouse and sail at any time provided weather conditions are within the defined limits of their rating.

   8. Light-Weather Helmsmen can sail only when supervised by other sailors of a higher rating.

   9. No member shall sail after dark without proper boat lighting and authorization of the Executive Council. Good luck and enjoy

sneakers or sandals that have good grip that your feet won't slide out of....

it's summer so you should be ok in shorts and a tee/tank top (be sure to wear sunblock!!!!!) but bring a windbreaker or sweatshirt and pants just in case.

are you going on a friend's boat? you might want to wear your bathing suit too in case they swim off of the boat...

and a hat or hair-thing and sunglasses

things to remember...when someone says "drop the line" DROP IT. otherwise, you could get a nasty and painful rope burn on your hands.

if you feel seasick...it's best to stay above deck and pick a focus point on the horizon line to look at and you can also put pressure on your wrists in the space where it dents in a little between the two bones..close to your pulse point.

terms:

bow: front of the boat

stern: back of the boat

starboard: right side of the boat (when facing the bow)

port: left side of the boat

head: bathroom

galley: kitchen (if it has one, i don't know what size boat you're going on)

tacking; process of zig zagging when you sail because the wind isn't blowing in the direction you need to go

come about: stay out of the way because the wind has shifted and the sail is swinging over to the other side

Comfortable deck shoes.  They should have rubber soles.

You don't want to slip on a wet boat deck.

A life belt is a must.  Dress for the weather but try to wear bright and cheerful colors.  Don't forget you might get a little wet from spray.

wear a bathing suit and shirt-optional with a kayaking or sailing made lifejacket and prolly a visor at least thats what i wear when i go out because when theres a lot of wind theres usually a lot of sun  o and put some sunscreen on

things to remember, watch out for the boom when u tack or jibe because if u dont then your pretty much garunteed to bet whacked in the head and it hurts and tends to be really frustrating and makes u feel like u never wanna go sailing again but if u watch out for it then you ll probably have a great time
