  1. The harbour (Eski Liman) has got an old history; it dates back to Roman times. The harbour lies below Kaleici with citadel walls along the slopes. Around the harbour lie cafes, restaurants and shops for tourists.

In the harbour are tour boats lying on line. If you walk around here in the evening you will for sure be asked to go on a day tour the day after or on an evening trip that same moment. In a restored Ottoman house in Kaleici is the Suna and Inan Kirac Kaleici Museum. On the upper floor the rooms has an ethnographic exhibition, showing life in the second half of the 19th century. Important events shown are the serving of coffee, the bride’s henna night and shaving of the bridegroom.

Across the courtyard is a restored Orthodox church. Here there is an exhibition of ceramics.

There is also a bookstore in the museum.

    Entrance fee is 1 000 000 TL (July 2004).

When I was there I was the only visitor. It was in the morning so I hope more people find their way there later during the day. It is centrally located in Kaleici.

Aspendos amphitheatre is one of the many sites to see in Asia Minor and one of the best preserved. It has a shape of semi circles with diameters of 95 metres. It has capability of seating for 7000 spectators.

Around 155 BC Zenon the Greek architect built the amphitheatre dedicated to the Gods and the Roman imperial family Marcus Aurelius. During the reign of Marcus Aurelius Aspendos city became prosperous and the amphitheatre was the central culture and economical welfare for the rich Romans. The imperial family and other rich Romans were entertained by operatic play, the Gladiators, wild animals fighting to the death.

The Seljuk’s Empire restored the amphitheatre and was used as caravanserai. The theatre is still used today, the theatre acoustics, stage decorations all testimony to the Greek architect success.

Perge originally is a Greek city. Today is an archaeological site and a major tourist attraction. It is about 18km to the east of Antalya and it takes about 20 minutes drive from CBD of Antalya.

The remained ruins are mainly of Romans origin except for the Hellenistic’s Gate. The Romans incorporates the Hellenistic Gate to be part of the city. The Romans built their own Roman Gate. The Roman gate was built during the reign of Septimius Severos early second century AD. You will also see Greek built Stadium where athletes from surrounding regions compete to honour their gods. It has a U shaped with an arch opening all along both side. They were also entrances to the Agora which is a shopping centre, it has square shaped. Many of the columns are still standing. The Roman baths is still fairly good shaped. See photo. Then there’s the Monumental Fountains and colonnaded street with some of columns are still standing. Not far from the city are the ruins of Roman aqueduct which supplied water to the city of Perge.

Historically Perge has been occupied by many invaders. It was originally settled by the Hittites. In the third century BC it was conquered by Alexander the Great. When the Roman took over, the city flourished to a great height and made it into proper Roman city.

Directions: It is about 18km to the east of Antalya and it takes about 20 minutes drive from CBD of Antalya.
