I surf and have spent most of my previous trips in the Guanacasta region, alot in Playa Samara as my home base. But this time I want to do something a little different. Suggestions would be helpful, thanks.

  1. Check out Pavones.

It is a long drive, but I love it there... I cant wait to go back.

The Pavones Riviera is where I stayed last time... it was 90/night for 4 people (4 beds, A/C, Kitchen, close to grocery store)

You are looking for "things to do" well, in Pavones, you get some of the best surfing on the planet.... but other then that, there is not much to do. You can wade around in the river if it is not completely wild when you are there, and there is also a bar with a ping-pong table... but there is not much else there.

I had a blast there, the surfing was awesome (although it was small for there) and I got some great rides.... my next trip is not til late summer '08, and I am counting down the days.

If you need any more info, message me.

  2. I've been to CR a lot as well and it's hard to reccomend one place over another since personal preferences come into play.  I would trust the travel book by Lonely Planet (Order online or go to Barnes and Nobles) titled "Costa Rica" since the writers have been to every single place in the country and they give good commentary on the specific conditions for surfing, lodging and nightlife.

  3. Have you tried doing a side-trip to Nicaragua? It's only 6 hours away by bus and has some beautiful regions, surfing, etc.

If you're looking to stay in CR, how about the Monteverde Cloud forest? There is tons to do there! I'm going in December.

  4. The Nicaragua suggestion was good.  Right next to the Costa Rican border, you have two great destinations:  Ometepe island in Lake Nicaragua (which is basically two volcanos joined together) and the beach town of San Juan del Sur, with numerous beaches to the south of it.
