I'm going to Cuba on the 15th of August, staying in Varadero. Which places are a must see?

Try to arrange at least a day trip to Havana.  We did a guided tour one day, and went back again on our own to explore a second day.  The city is beautiful and unique - beautiful old buildings, old cars, a great market, the Malecon, museums, etc.  

If you can arrange a day trip to do a tour of the countryside that would also be good.  We hired a driver and a van through the hotel at Marina Hemingway and five of us went to the Vinales (spelling???) area, did a boat ride into a cave, saw a tobacco farm, explored a few villages, stopped at roadside markets, visited a rum distillery and had a wonderful time.

Cuba is much more than beaches.  Get away from Veradero at least for a few days and see some of the rest of Cuba.
