Question:

I'm going to England tomorrow and I need some help...?

Hi. I live in the US and I'm going to England tomorrow. I was told not to bring my hair dryer because even with a converter, I might blow a fuse because it has such a high voltage. What I'm wondering is, can I bring my hair straightener? It's very expensive. Does it use the same voltage as the dryer? Should I just buy a cheap one over there? I'm going to college for a month over there, so maybe if its not too expensive I'll split the cost with my roommate...

  1. I was just there last month and I am a hairstylist. Do not bring your flat iron!!! It will not work and could seriously fry your hair even with the converter, not to mention kill the flat iron itself. Go to a store called Boots (they are everywhere) and get a cheap flat iron for about $40. You won't be sorry. One suggestion I do have is get a thermal protector spray for your hair since the quality of the flat iron won't be as good. Have fun and check out the Soho area....best pub ever is Be@one!

  2. I live in england and ive never blown a fuse ever, ive got high voltage appliances, honestly its prett much the same = )

should be worried more bout the chavs :D lol.

  3. Don't bring it, go to Boots and buy one when you get here. The only thing I could have brought was my curling iron, it was dual voltage.

  4. buy a cheap one over here ... best place to get them is either in any large branch of one of the major supermarkets (e.g. Tesco, Sainsbury etc) or one of the major electrical retailers (e.g. Currys Comet) ... they're not that expensive and it's better than taking the risk with the ones you've got ... also it will mean less to pack !!

  5. Yes in my opinion i think you should buy it there, it's better to be safe then sorry!

  6. Yeah, buy a cheap one over there and leave the expensive one home.  Changing the subject.......You know gas is $10.00 a gallon over there, don't you?

  7. US voltage is 110

    UK voltage is 240

You will burn out your US appliance if you plug it into UK outlets.

Buy one over there, they are cheap enough, but shop around first.

  8. My friend blew her flat up when she was drying her hair. Now she has no flat but her hair is ok.

  9. At Target they sell travel hair dryers with voltage adapters.

  10. because of the Voltage difference it will just be better if you play it safe and buy a cheap one here ... though, when something is cheap in England, it doesn't exactly mean that it's cheap compared to other places

and welcome to England for tomorrow, we are having some lovely grey and rainy weather at the moment to greet you :-)
