I'm 20 so please keep the age in mind and I'm also going alone :P Also how cold is the weather and what is the normal temperature for the day and night in late December/ January.

  1. go to a concert man, theres so many awesome bands in finland, or meet the dudesons hahaha lol u wont findem anyway

  2. Not sure what there would be in offer during the New Year, as many of the museums and art places tend to be closed or at least have restricted opening hours then. Museum-wise there are the Kiasma modern art museum, National Art Museum (Ateneum) as well as National Museum that are worth for checking out. For coffee and food there is the restaurant in Stockmann shopping place, as well as many fastfood places (McDonald's, Hesburger, pizzerias) which have the longest opening hours, though the "real" restaurants such as Kalastajatorppa tend to be quite pricey in Helsinki. The average weather should be quite mild actually, because these days there is not much snow on the ground in southern Finland. The temperatures vary usually from -10C to some + degrees, it is not much colder there these days so you won't freeze here!

  3. I'm an American, but I live in St. Petersburg Russia, which is right across the Gulf of Finland from Helsinki.  Depending on how I go there it takes me between 4-6 hours.  The good news for you is that 95% of the people speak English in Helsinki and are very polite.  They will immediately recipricate your kindness to them as lots of their economy is generarted by toursim.  My best experience in Helsinki was when I went into a small pub and the owner sat down and talked with me.  You'll be surprised how many owners are also the barman.  My suggestion is to go into a local friendly pub, which are scattered everywhere and start talking to a native.  You'll be amazed how far they will go to help you enjoy your stay and show you the best spots in town.  Depending on how you arrive ie Train, Ship, Plane there is great public transportation to get around.  There are also some easy to get to day long bus tours.  I know of one close to the shipyard that offers awesome tours in English.  So if you go to the port where the ships dock (I think there is only one and it is in the downtown) you'll see the bus stand, really cool open markets, a cathedral or two and lots of friendly people.  As for the weather is will be cold, but not rediculous.  Definitely bring a warm coat and sweaters.  Helsinki is on the Gulf of Finland so there can be lots of wind.  Good Luck and Enjoy!
