forget it == i been in an accident while overseas - and it was not my fault (really) but the problems  is not worth the honorle of having you own transportation!!!

It's doable,but can have grave and expensive consequences if you are involved in an accident that causes personal or property damage (including stray animals) .

I have often bought and ridden a used motorcycle on 'extended' trips, trips when I know I will be working and renting an apartment for awhile in different countries in Central and South America and then sold it when I left.Your questions about pricing, buying, licenses, permits, insurance and/or bonds will be best answered "after" you arrive in Peru. You may also check with Peruvian authorities before you travel if you choose to apply for your visa prior to leaving at one of the embassies outside of Peru. Availability, prices,and licenses/permits etc will vary from country to country and also from one area to another within the country.Some countries still require an International Drivers Licence & several a cash bond etc.

You should also be aware that if you are involved in an accident it is possible that you can spend a lot of time in jail and/or prison depending on the existing laws of the country and also your culpability.My best advice to you is to research this as thoroughly as possible because if you bend or circumvent any local laws and something bad happens even your own embassy will not be able to help you.

Finally, if and when you ride,do your best to look and dress like a local and always wear a helmet,preferably a full face, to hide your identity as a tourist to avoid being taken advantage of by the three C's...Crooks,Cons & Cops. If you are not going to stay 'at least' 3 months it probably wouldn't be worth the risk, time, trouble and expense verses using local transportation.
