  1. If you are super busy and cant find time, then no.  Pompeii really needs a full day to be appreciated and make it worth your time to travel across Italy to reach it.  We left really early (around 5) one morning from our lodging and it took about 5 hours to reach it from Rome.  We spent a very full day seeing Mt. Vesuvius and exploring Pompeii.  We could have easily made another day of it.  We came back late in the afternoon.  It can be done and is well worth it, you just need to have adequate time for this trip.

  2. Actually Pompeii is only a two and a half hour drive from Rome if you drive nonstop.  I don't know why it took the other person five hours to get there...with so much to see in Rome and Florence being in the opposite direction it might not be feasible if you only have a week...On my first trip to Italy I did Rome, Florence, Pisa, Milan, Lakes, Verona, Venice, Assisi, Pompeii/Capri/Sorento but I had 14 days to do it (and did not stay overnight in all those places). ..

  3. It took us 3 hours from the Rome airport to Naples.  Then you can go to Pompeii.  A full day is best, but it can be seen in a half day.  With a week to spend, I would concentrate on Rome and Florence, where most of the major art in Italy is located.  Besides, not going this trip gives you an excuse to return to Italy.  We go to Italy at least once a yeart, and start planning the next trip as soon as we get back.  We will be in Sicily the first week of March, then 2 days in Naples, before returning home.  I am a travel agent and Italy is my specialty.  I would be happy to help in any way I can to enhance your experience of Italy.

  4. Pompei is wonderful, but you need a day to visit it. It's a big place.

  5. It is out of the way.  What you plan is like visiting LA & SF and wanting to swing down to San Diego.

  6. Rome to Naples takes 1½ to three hours  depending on the type of train that you get.  On to Pompei takes another 30 min.  It's also worth seeing Herculaneum.  It is less known and quieter.
