I'm going to Geneva with my mum on a relaxing 3 day break. Does anyone have any tips of places to go or avoid? How about general etiquette? How much do I tip? Thanks a bunch in advance!

  1. Tipping is included in the cost of restaurant items here.  Most people just round up the bill (ie. if it's CHF 88 you would leave CHF 90).

In regards to general etiquette, people say hello (bonjour) when you enter stores and it is considered rude not to do so yourself.

This is a nice time of year to walk around the city.  Visit the old town (the Cathedral has a lovely view from the tower if you feel energetic enough to climb up).  There are ice cream places around the lake where you can just sit and watch the world go by.

If you're interested - the Palais de Nations (UN building) is well worth a visit and the Red Cross Museum is well worth seeing.

The Geneva Tourisme website has loads of information:  http://www.geneve-tourisme.ch/

    Happy travels!

  2. Apart fm checking out Geneva I'd take a train/car ride to Lausanne and nearby villages(it's a lovely wine region and now the grape-picking it's on). There are also steamboat-diner-cruises (reservations necessary but I'm not sure if they still have them in October), the Chateau de Chillon is lovely too and the city of Montreux (famous for it's Jazz-Festival). Advise you to get actual info's with the Tourist office since certain things can change.

Etiquette: just be yourself, lol and for the tips - they are included in the price but if you have a very nice, attentive service the personelle never says NO for a little extra... Enjoy!

  3. Geneve is a very quiet city !

You can see the "Jet d'eau" in the Geneva's lake (Leman). and the old town with the city hall.

After while you have the main street where you can buy swiss chocolate or a swiss watch....

Near of, you have lausane with the Olympic Museam and the lake.

Switzerland is a very relaxing country. The day, all seems so quiet ^_^ And if you like Trekking you can do the "Creu du Van" near of Neuchatel...

  4. The international Olympics museum is there too, I found it interesting.
