I'm going to Venice, Italy by myself the first time?

I am 18 yrs old and I am going to the institute of Venice to study Italian I'm trying to decide whether I want to do homestudy where I stay with a person from that country and get more out of my money because I'll have a better chance to learn the language whereas I stay in a room with other people from all around the world?

stay with other people becuse you will eat , drink and live italian, you iwll need a little rest from the italianess of it all

Stay with native Italians !

And don´t worry about the venetian dialect: Only the old Venetians speak the real "Veneto", an old language. The venetian Italian is very soft, elegant and pleasant for the ears (... my ears...)

I would suggest staying with a family.  It's easier to become fluent in a language when you're speaking it regularly with native speakers.  Anyway, you'll still get to meet people from around the world in your classes.  Besides -- a local person will know all the best places to go!

Definitely go native - you'll have so many more chances of absorbing the "local flavor", beyond the formal studies.

You'll make friends with the other people in your program anyway, since you'll be interacting with them during the day.

I loved Venice!!!!!!  I went in the winter and it was cold as !@*&# but it was awsome!!!!  Be careful of those Gondola drivers they are players - I had to watch after my wife very carefully!  You will have fun.  I hear the city smells in the summer, so beware.  I bet you will be living on Italian Ice Cream!!!!   Have fun!

Venice is a beautiful place however to learn Italian I would suggest Rome. The dialect up north is somewhat different and does not exactly match the Italian used by the majority of Italians.

i'd do the former. you'll get a much better experience and be forced to learn the language. no amount of schooling can replace having to speak a language with native speakers for everything you need on a daily basis.

i took spanish for 5 years and i didn't learn a thing til i started having to use it at work on a regular basis.

Just do what you think is best.

I'm so jealous of you!  

Personally, I think that staying with Italians would be better because you'll learn not only more about the language, but about the culture too.
