and was wondering if there was anywhere anyone recommends that we definitely should see. Also, we are thinking about going elsewhere in the country and is there anywhere anyone recommends.

  1. Accademia:The Gallerie dell’Accademia contains masterpieces of Venetian painting up to the 18th century, generally arranged chronologically though some thematic displays are evident.

La Torre dell'Orologio (St Mark's Clock):The Moors’ Clock Tower is one of the most famous architectural landmarks in Venice, standing over an arch that leads into what is the main shopping street of the city, the old Merceria. It marks both a juncture and a division between the various architectural components of St. Mark’s Square, which was not only the seat of political and religious power but also a public space and an area of economic activity, a zone that looked out towards the sea and also played a functional role as a hub for the entire layout of the city.

In short, the Tower and its large Astronomical Clock, a masterpiece of technology and engineering, form an essential part of the very image of Venice. For more than five hundred years, they have measured out the flow of life and history within the city.

Horses of St. Mark: The Triumphal Quadriga or Horses of Saint Mark is a set of Roman or Greek bronze statues of four horses, originally part of a monument depicting a quadriga. They date from the Classical Antiquity and have been attributed to the Greek sculptor Lysippos.

    Have fun on your trip!!

  2. Read the guide to Venice which I wrote most of:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/A19...

  3. Siena or Stresa in the north. But it's winter so don't go there unless you like the cold. I really REALLY recommend Siena. oooo and Assisi, it's absolutly breathtaking. Both are on hills but Assisi has the most amazing views. Siena is just an all around gorgeous place and the Piazza is a great way to see italian life and to sit and eat and shop.

  4. hi! I'm italian, I think that Venice is not very beautiful, the best city is Rome, then Turin, Florence, Naples. You must visit Piazza San Marco, the city's centre, it's beauty.

  5. I've been there three or four times now. The whole place is spectacular, particularly St Mark's Square and the Grand Canal. Bring plenty of money as everything costs twice as much in Venice as on the mainland.

  6. The Eyewitness Travel Guide is the best book for anywhere you want to go.  I am jealous.  I already had my vacation for this, granted it was awesome, 16 days in Prague.  But next year it is Prague and Holland.  Have a great trip!!!

  7. Venice was my favorite stop on  my 10 day tour of Italy!  It was AWESOME.  Don't miss the Rialto and behind it is a great shopping district where they will bargain with you and you can get some good deals.

Also- you have to get a pizza in Venice.  It is the best pizza I have ever had and I have never been able to find it anywhere else!

Take a gondola ride.  They are a bit pricey but totally worth it.  We bargained our ride down to  22 euros while there. You can see so many more things when riding on the water and the drivers are awesome.  I am soooo jealous I loved Venice.

My second favorite stop and a place I would reccommend is the Vatican City just outside of Rome.  I was amazed by the city and discovered a wealth of information there.   Florence is also a very nice stop.  The Durme is breathtaking and it was fun to walk the streets and see the amazing art work.  The statue of David is also located in Florence.

Have Fun!!!!  I wish I were going with you.

  8. I had the greatest four days in Venice.  The architecture, the people, the art, the FOOD!  Yum!  Casual exploration is the best way to go.  Bring a digital camera with tons of room on your disk and good walking shoes - their are no motor vehicles and bikes would be ridiculous due to the bridges and people.  Where you "have to" go?

-the isle of Murano and its glass factories and shops

-Piazza San Marco where you will find so many museums, shops and picture opps.

-Rialto Bridge where the shops and sights are amazing.

There are so many sites to check out on line

Venice is a very beautiful place and you are 1 lucy person 2 b going there...

  11. My suggestions:

Public transportation is great in Venice - the "vaporetta" water bus is their public transportation. You can buy an all day pass for about $15 Euros (might have changed in the last year since my visit). That would be good to do on your first day. You can then ride the Vaporetta all day, jumping on and off at whatever stops you want. When you first get there, take the #1 Vaporetta - it goes from one end of the canal to the other. You can see all the sights from the boat and decide what you want to do later on. Wait around at the back where there are a few outside seats on the back deck. When someone leaves, grab a seat quickly, enjoy the great view and take lots of pictures.

See St. Mark's Basilica, St. Mark's Square (just watch out for pigeons) and Doge's Palace. There are a number of different passes and cards you can buy that can save you money depending on what you actually want to see (e.g. there's a chorus pass, a Venice card etc) Do a google search to find out current details of prices and what is covered. There is music in St. Mark's square every night. Free to listen to and dancing in the square in encouraged. You only have to pay if you want to sit in one of the chairs.

There are the Peggy Guggeheim Collection and the Galleria Dell'Accademia (not to be confused with the one in Florence that houses Michalengelo's David") in Venice which are both worth seeing.

Stay away from the water taxis unless you've got a lot of cash as these are very expensive. Bring as little luggage as possible (make sure they have wheels). There are a lot of bridges and in some cases you'll have to carry your luggage up and down steps to get to your hotel. Also get good directions to your hotel before you get there.

If you have extra cash and want to experience something only Venice has to offer, splurge for a gondola ride. It is pricey. You can negotiate but it will cost you about 80 Euros for 30 - 40 minutes. Count on spending about 40 Euros more if you want to go under the moonlight and 40 Euros more if you want a musician to seranade you on the gondalo. For a cheaper version, try the "traghetta". This is "gondola-like" and will take you across the canal from one side to another for only 1.50 Euro. A bargain.

You can find out a lot of info on the internet, but we also found carrying a couple travel books with good maps was a great help. We liked Frommer's, Fodors and Rick Steves. All had good and bad points. Try your library or bookstore. Flip through and see which one(s) work best for you. They helped us out.

There is also lots to do in Florence & Rome.

Enjoy Venezia! It's beautiful and there is no other place in the world like it..
