So I guess originally it meant a dress for women. If you are going to definitely wear pants, I'd wear really nice black pants that look dressy, but not old ladyish at all and a cute but dressy top with nice high heels.

Is your top black? I wouldn't wear completely all black to a wedding.. but as far as shoes.. I'd go with either a semi dressy heel or flat..depending on which you prefer.

  If you want to wear black pants you're going to have to do it correctly.  I would pair your pants with a dressy, yet tasteful satin top.  Add a great pair of earrings.  Keep it classy.  Generally, women wear cocktail dresses but I think you can work with what you've got.
