I'm supporting a disabled guy to go on holiday to London. On the first night (Sunday) he and one of my colleagues have tickets to a gig at the o2 so i've got a free night to do as I please.

Suggestions?

  1. Ageed - All Bar One is for ponces.

At the site below you can find the pub you are looking for.  You'll also be able to read 'commends' (most rude etc) from other pub-goers just like yourself. . . .

I think you should avoid the Bankside area of Southwark as this tends to be very touristy - Shakespeare's Globe, the Anchor Tavern Bankside etc - worth a visit but only if you wanna be a tourist for the day.

  2. does it matter a pubs a pub

  3. in the pub geesh you scots need a hand with everything dont ya

  4. "Best place for a Scotsman"...why, are Scotsmen different from everyone else?

"A real man wouldn't be seen dead in an All Bar One"; I think you have issues!

  5. A few of the very best pubs in London are hidden away in backstreets around Southwark (let's say within 10-15 mins walk of London Bridge or Borough tube stations);

The two I would particularly recommend would be: The Lord Clyde, on Clennam Street SE1 (which must be one of the shortest streets in London, so look at the map carefully - it's not far from Southwark Bridge)

    and

The Royal Oak on Tabard Street SE1 (also a bit hidden away - but no more than a 3 minute walk from Borough tube)

This one's a bit small, but it does fine ales, and some lovely pub grub as well.

If you wanted to make more of a pub crawl of it, look here

for some suggestions in the area; The Market Porter is a fine place too (but often very crowded, standing room only), right by Borough Market/London Bridge station, the George Inn (in a yard off Borough High Street) is historically interesting, and a nice place to drink outdoors, or the Blue Eyed Maid (also on Borough High Street, a bit closer to Borough tube) does a good curry to go with your pint.

(There did used to be a Scottish pub round these parts until a couple of years ago too, if you were missing the 70/- or 80/-, but it is sadly no more)

Edit: of the above I reckon either the Lord Clyde or the Market Porter would be best for football - but you could call any of them (phone numbers on the fancyapint pages linked to) ahead to check - I would definitely favour the Clyde of the two, though, in all.

  6. Southwark is a borough, not an actual place so it's actually covering miles and miles (11.1 sq mi) so recommending a pub is hard because you could be in Dulwich, Peckham, London Bridge, Sydenham, Bermondsey etc.

You'll have to say where in Southwark you are.

  7. Try The George Inn in Borough High Street.

  8. Borough Market...the market isn't open on Sunday but its probably the coolest place around Southwark and has some great pubs/bars...but be ready for an expensive night out
