I'm going to be in Venice in mid August. What are the chances of us experiencing acqua alta?

How important is it for us to carry rain boots all over Europe just in case we get flooded in Venice?

It's possible, but very unlikely that there will be a significant event in August. Last year, the first high water event was in late October This is more a late fall, winter occurrence (see: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/...

I was at the biennale in late June and there were small puddles around the drains in Piazza San Marco, but they didn't last long and did not affect the whole Piazza. I have been there when the water was over my knees (I'm 6' 3") in some areas in November.

Many of the hotels have boots available for their guests when necessary. You don't really need to bring them with you.

There was high water in Saint Marc's square about two weeks ago of so but nothing really affecting the entire city. Venice gets it extraordinary high tides starting in October. I've been in and out of Venice the past years and can tell you that this past year (2006 / 2007 season) has seen very little high water.

So... you won't need boots in August... you'll need sun tan lotion instead.

Your main problem is likely to be the hot weather, rather than the rain.

The probability of experiencing acqua alta in August is negligible, you don't need to worry about rain boots.

it can happen but it is very very rare. You shouldn't carry rain boots etc also because in case of emergency you can get equipped on site for cheap. Also consider that in case of high tide, the flooding doesn't last the whole day so depending on what time it happens, you may be sleeping or visiting a museum.
