  1. water weighs 1gram per cubic centimeter. Calculate

the total weight of your family, your boat and all the extra equipment you intend to carry on the boat. Your boat must have a minimum displacement equal to that weight.

  2. Instead of building a boat from scratch why not Recycle a boat from your local marina and design it to suite your family needs , you all will Bond and have the pleasure of saying ,yes    we did that.

  3. If you are building a skiff, of flat bottom boat, you want to add the weight of your family and all the equipment and supplies you want to carry in it, including the weight of the motor and battery if it is a power boat, or if it is a sailboat, the weight of coolers, porta potti, etc.  With either, you want a minimum of six or eight inches of ull above the waterline.  (Freeboard)  I suggest you decide on a design.  If you are new to this, it is easier and safer to buy a plan for a boat that fits your requirements.  The cost of good materials is high enough that it isn't wise to design the first boat you build.  You need to familiarize yourself with a publication called Wooden Boat.  It is a magazine put out every two months.  It is full of building tips,  and they also have published three books  that are cataloges of Building plans.  They have a design to meet your needs, whatever they are.  They often times can be accompanied by books or booklets, and often-times videos of how to build a lot of their plans.  They also have advertisors that supply every piece of equipment you need for building your boat.  They also publish a bi-monthly magazine solely devoted to proffessional boat builders.  Don't forget to add flotation to the boat and include anchors, lifejackets, etc to the weight you will need to carry.  (waterline displacement.)  In this manner, you can find excellent facts, not opinion and advice from every Tom, d**k, and Harry.  (PEOPLE LIKE ME........LOL.  Good luck and have fun.  (by the way, I build canoes, sailboats and hunting, fishing boats, runabouts, etc for a living, and canoeing a small beautiful mountain streams and rivers with my kids as kept our family tight, and provided a lifetime of good memories and feelings for us all.)  Good luck, AND STAY SAFE, HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
