I'm going to buy a plane ticket to a family member and that person has a visa , ?

my question is , do i buy a round trip or could i get a one way with no problem . i'm buying it online later i would buy the returning ticket thanks so much for your time .

Unless you're using an airline that sells one-way tickets routinely [JetBlue, Southwest, for example] it's probably going to cost you a LOT more to buy two one-way tickets.  It would almost certainly be cheaper to buy the round-trip and then, if you must, pay the fee to change the return date.
