I'm going to court today as a witness to a car accident. I'm kind of nervous and unsure of what to do. What will it be like and what can I do to stay calm when I'm there?

  1. take deep breaths

remind yourself that your there to help

who ever was at fault deserves to get punished and pay for damages or whatever happend...

your the third party that can clear up what happend

    tell the truth and relax

  2. Don't worry.  They will direct you as to what to do.  My 14 YO son was a witness.  They asked ques, he answered, and that was it.

  3. What a day to go to court, today is the first day of school.  Ok what they will do is put you in the witness chair and tie yu down, then they will ask you questions and if you answer wrong you will get a slight vibration, (this is just a warning sign)  In order to stay calm I would suggest if your of age that you take a jigger of Vodka, this will relax you but could also impair your speech.  Good luck in court today.

I hope this takes the edge off a little bit, humor always helps a stressful situation.

  4. You are a witness to a car accident which means you probably already gave testimony via a written statement to a police officer at time of incident. Here is what will likely happen. If you are a defense witness, you will be called by the defense and asked questions by the defense lawyer first. He will probably start with simple questions like, On the _th day of ____ where were at __:__ o clock? It will progress all the way to what did you see happen? Then the Plaintiff (civil) or the Prosecutor (criminal) will ask you questions on what is called a "Cross Examination"  generally just be relaxed. You are not on trial for anything just don't mix up your stories with what you told the police officer at time of initial questioning or they will attack your credibility. Stay calm, relaxed, take your time to answer questions. And answer them as easily as possible. For example don't throw useless information in there. I.e.. "Where were you at 8:00 o'clock?" Well, i woke up that morning and decided to go get a coffee so I went to starbucks at 7:00 and bought a cafe mocha. Then I sat and enjoyed it until 8 at which time I saw the accident."  Instead say something like, I was sitting inside starbucks."  The lawyers will know how to question you. Just answer their questions as directly as possible. and above all...maintain calmness.

  5. Just act like your telling on your little brother.
