  1. you need to book train tickets as soon as possible.  1.  it will be cheaper to pay for the tickets with dollars than with euros.  2.  the train sometimes fills up. have a great trip!

  2. No, it is not necessary to pre-book tickets - especially at this time of year. I use the trains every weekend and usually just get a ticket at the station in the morning. During the peak tourist season, and other times like Easter, you need to get tickets ahead of time. Right now, the difficult ticket would be on trains to Munich since Octoberfest starts this weekend, but there won't be a problem within Italy.

You can go to the station and buy a ticket a day or so in advance if you're more comfortable having the ticket in hand. The ticket machines have an English language interface option or you can go to one of the ticket windows.

Tickets are not cheaper paying in dollars or reserving in advance.

  3. You don't need to.  It's quite easy to book them at the Termini on the little machines (like an ATM).  However I would suggest that you do it the day before if you all want to sit together.  I did this from Florence to Rome and was fine.  The day of we were a little early, so we ended up seated diagnolly across the aisle from each other.  Also, make pay the extra for the Eurostar.  It's so much quicker.

  4. Buy your tickets in Italy, 2nd class is fine.

    Have a great time!

  5. You should be fine if you wait to get the ticket ahead of time and I say this because it is not tourist season anymore so the trains do not fill up like they do in the summer. The difference in price is not hat much if any i've learned.

  6. if you definitely know your date & time book now.  if you  want to be flexible book when you get to florence.  there are many trains to venice -- it's a popular destination.  make sure you book the "fast" train w/ fewer stops....

you may actually want to plan an overnight in venice to make better use of your time....

  7. If you are sure you are going to go to Venice it is not a bad idea, it never hurts to do things in advance.  I went to both cities a few years ago and wish I could get back there.  I hope you have a great time.
