How do you build a chicken pen and a duck pen (I'll be keeping them seperate)?

Or can you buy ready made pens/coops?

  1. TYPE IN ALL YOU  NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CHICKENS AND ALL KINDS OF INFO WILL COME UP TELLS YOU HOW TO BUILD AND ALL YOU NEED TO START OUT WITH

  2. contrary to the previous speaker, you can buy ready made coops. However, they are expensive, so it is usually easier to make yours. go to www.mypetchicken.com it has all your care infomation, it will tell you about all the different breeds. it has coop plans for building yourself and premade ones for sale.

before getting chickens, please reasearch the breeds, like dogs and cats there are tons of breeds of chickens, and some are going to be better suited for you than others. Pick bantam or standard. Bantams are miniature chickens, about 1/3 of the size of standard chickens. they lay little eggs, don't need as much space, or food. I recomend them for children, as they are easier to handle. My favorite breeds: Cochins, Amerucanas, Japanese bantam, and Australorps.

  3. You cannot buy ready made coops.

On the duck pen, you must use hardware cloth for the sides and bury 6 inches of the wire underground. You must not use chicken wire because raccoons will rip right through it. Same for the chicken coop. It really needs to be covered. For that, you should use chicken wire or avain netting. It is to keep the hawks out.

Here is a link to a list of many different kinds of plans you can follow, depending on which you like best:
