I'm going to San Fransico with my family for my big cousins wedding and I'm worried about leaving my dog at home. I'm afraid something is gonna go wrong with him like hes gonna run away and get hit by a car or starve to death. Has anyone been worried or couldnt stop thinking about there dog? I left city to go up north for 2 days and I was already so worried about my dog. Help is there somethign I can over come? And who should I trust to take care of my dog for a week or so?

  1. you should leave them at the boarding facilities that are clean..not the ones that smell like p**s and full of c**p.

  2. i understand how you are feeling - i get the same feeling whenever i have to travel and leave my dogs at home, if no family members can watch my dogs, I leave them with my vet, they have boarding there which is fairly cheap, and chose them because if anything goes wrong there is a vet right there and they know my dogs best - i don't want to drop them off at kennels or doggy daycare, most of the ppl hired for those places are not qualified to handle a dog if a situation arises, not to mention those places are fairly pricey for what they are.

  3. First off, you are going to have a blast because the bay area is awesome =)

Secondly, I absolutely went through the same issues. We were going to the Virgin Islands for a week, and I was literally on the verge of a panic attack about leaving the dog for a week. I hate to see how I am when we have kids one day.. HAHA. So for this first trip, I thought it would be best to have a friend come over and actually stay at the house for the week. In our case, it didn't go so well. The dog was having some separation issues and ended up pooping on the floor the first 3 days we were gone. Our friend was awesome about cleaning up, but he was NOT pleased. Rocko had never once had an accident on the floor prior to this. The rest of the week was OK, but our friend was really ready for us to be home at the end of the week. Its a big responsibility to care for someones dog! A few months later, we needed to go to Chicago for 5 days for a wedding. This time through, we left the big boy at a reputable Kennel that my parents have been using for 40 years. Not only was I not a stress case this time, but the dog was having a GREAT time there. It was like a vacation for him too I think. And I knew that the people watching him were 100% capable of dealing with him.

So personally, I suggest doing LOTS of research on kennels in your area and see if you would be comfortable leaving your buddy with them. For me, its the best choice.

  4. Talk to a coworker, relative, or neighbor that you trust. Make sure you give them a walk of the house beforehand, explain exactly where food is, and where food and water dishes are.

Depending on how well your dog is being left inside, or what the weather is like, you'll have to make the call on keeping them inside and having the 'dog sitter'  let them out a couple times a day, or to leave them outside, and make sure they get their food, etc.

Make sure you leave the sitter with a list of phone numbers (emergency contact, your number, the number of the place you'll be staying at, the vet, and possibly an emergency vet number).

Generally checking on the dog 2 times a day (morning and evening) is sufficient, but if you have a dog that gets out of the yard easily, or chews up the house whenever you're out, you might want to look into boarding them at a local vet while you're gone (you'll be charged, so it's up to you to figure out the cost).

  5. You can put your dog in a boarding kennel or have someone you know and trust to come and house sit and look after the dog. Don;t leave it home alone because when you get back the dog will be gone and you will be in court with a big fine for animal cruelty.Or check on-line to see if there are any pet friendly accommodation places near where you are going and take the dog with you.
