I've been told that three days in Venice is plenty and that four days is lots for Rome! Is this true?

  1. rome is v crowded, noisy. colloseum's ace though, so do that.

    pompeii well worth a trip

  2. My God! and you're not going to Pisa, Florence, Naples or Siena?

My advise: you gotta add another week or 10  more days to your trip!

2-3 days in Venice is fine, I would spend at least 5-6 days in Rome if you really want to see averything without the rush of a tour bus. Vatican, Foro Romano, Colisseo, and so many other places to enjoy art and culture in general, it's a pity you would go there and not get the whole picture (or the whole meals!).

  3. I spend a lot of time in Italy and what you have been told is very accurate.

To be honest 2 days is probably enough in Venice although it depends on what time of day etc you arrive and leave. 2 full days is good enough in Venice. Venice is not that big.

Yes, for Rome 3-4 days is perfect. That is enough time to see the main things you want. After 3 or 4 you might have had enough of the crowds and crazyness of Rome.

You could go to the lakes although I would recommend somewhere such as Sicily if you are able to find 2 days from somewhere.

  4. You should try checking out some of the mountain and lake regions. They are not filled with tourists and so offer some more real Italian experiences. Check out seeSebino.com for an example!

  5. there are too many things to see...it depends on you...rome is wonderful and full of surprises

  6. Cinque terre in the italian riviera is breath taking and a good alternative to the crowded touris cities check it out! you can read more  below

    http://www.helium.com/tm/97713/visit-cha...

and look at you tube videos of the cinque terre

  7. thats sort of right, but you wont see everything in four days and youll be shattered i would suggest fly into rome have 3 days then come back to fly home and have a couple of days to see what you havent seen yet, but i would spend as much time as possible visiting the lakes maggiore como and garda are the main ones but there are some stunning smaller less well known lakes such as lago d'iseo

  8. I visited Italy not too long ago and here's what I think.

Rome: Amazing city, If you're interested in seeing all the historic sites, i would recommend at least five days.

Florence: I don't know whether you're planning on seeing this city, but if you do, it's worth ALL your time. It is the mecca of artists.

Venice: This place is gorgeous, but there isn't much to do. When I went, one day was sufficient, in fact, I didn't know what to do all day rather than just walk around.

In the end, anywhere in Italy is a place worth going to.

    HAVE FUN, and Good Luck,

    Andreea

  9. Hi...I'm Italian

I've visited Rome in three days, but it has been a fast visit and I knew that I'll come back soon, so four days aren't plenty for Rome, but for Venice three days can be sufficient..

    (((Sorry for my English)))    ;-)

  10. When I went to Italy a couple years ago I was in Venice for three days and Rome for four.  We got to see everything we wanted to  and also had plenty of time to do extra things and just explore.  Also if you are looking to go somewhere really great, I would recommend Assisi and Lake Maggiore.  Assisi is absolutely beautiful, built at the top of a hill and it really isn't that touristy.  It is small and you can easily walk everywhere.  Several of the streets are narrow and there are lots of stairs.  The highest point has a castle/fort and climbing mt subasio to St Francis's Eremo is definitely worth it.

Lake Maggiore is way up in the north and in fact I think it might border Switzerland.  It is surrounded by snow capped mountains yet it has a tropical climate in the summer with palm trees and beautiful flowers.  There is an island in the middle of the lake with a beautiful villa you can visit.  When I was there we stayed in Stresa.  Again it is another smaller town.

Check out smaller cities and towns.  They have the true charm of the country!

  11. Depends what you want? but I would highly recomend a couple of days lake garda area (riva del garda) absolutely stunning place and nice and peacefull great scenic roads running alongside the lake

  12. Capri, Venice, Pompeii, Florence and Pisa are all fab.

Rome can be so busy.  If you go March time you should be ok though.

  13. I'm sorry but some of what you have been told is bunkhum and when I read from someone that 1 day in Venice was sufficient I nearly had to pick my lower jaw off the keyboard!

Go to your local library or bookstore and take a look at some of those city guides. If these cities could only sustain interest for 1-3 days these guides would be pamphlets but instead they are books literally hundreds of pages long.  My copies of Everyman Guide to Rome  for example is 515 pages in length, 392 pages for Florence, and Venice, that city that can give you all it has to offer in 1 day  allegedly, goes to 464 pages! Even Francesco de Mosta for the BBC series gave it 4 programmes.!! Its no one day city and any one has has shown her a bit of respect and lingered longer will know that it spending one NIGHT there is the real deal when it takes on a magical air as the street lamps light up, you feel like you are wandering around a film set. Similarly Florence and the rest of Toscana has enough art to occupy a lifetime and Rome....Rome is crazy and I love it.

I'm sorry to go on like this but the correspondents who say it depends on what you want and what interests you are spot on. Take a peek in some books and get acquainted with Italy, not only will it help you decide how to split your time but you will better understand and appreciate what you see. Italian culture and history is extremely complex and when you really think you've got it, you haven't.
