  1. rugged carpet-- go to carpet mart

  2. A low profile rug like a berber is great, however they are price very high/yard.  I would tend to go to a true carpet store and see all the alternatives.  The big boxes have nice selections, but not necessarily the one you want, plus the help at Carpet mart may have better advice from experience.  good luck.

  3. Berber is great for high traffic areas.

  4. Not only should you consider the type (berber is great for heavy traffic), you should also consider the color.  We all know that tan colors show dirt the least, but I found out the hard way that there's another reason for sticking to the neutrals in high traffic areas.  We had a tasteful, muted blue in our family room once.  When it got dirty, we cleaned it, but it still didn't look good.  When we had a professional come to clean it, he explained that many colors on carpet "wear off" with foot traffic.  Who knew??  Check out a carpet called "wonda-weave" (sp?), I think it's made by DuPont.  It's high quality and comes in lots of styles.  Remember, you get what you pay for...

Good luck, hope this helps some!

  5. I would probably go with a low pile carpet which people in the carpet business are much more well suited to help out with samples and suggestions. Naturally a store specializing in carpet flooring is going to be more knowledgeable but as is the case, more times than not their prices will be a bit higher. But because that is their sole source of business they would be a better choice to buy from because they will have better installers and materials needed for a good installation.

  6. I have had Berber carpet for over ten years and it still looks good. We live in the country and had two dogs and kids on it.

If something gets spilled on it I just mix up detergent and a little bleach and everythings cleans up

  7. home depot & lowes do have decent prices.  "frieze" (also called california berber) carpet is good for high traffic and not as boring as a plain berber.
