Question:

I'm going to start up boxing soon?

I want to make it pro. I haven't told anybody of this yet, because of how they would ridcule me on my impractical goal and tell me to go study 4-8 hours like I usually do.

I weigh 142 pounds, can bench 165, squat around 225, and run a 6-flat mile. I'm 14 cracking 15 pretty soon. What should I do to reach my utopian goal?

Please, if you wouldn't like somebody to say something to you, don't say to me.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Awesome!  Good for you for following your dreams!

I'm a 14 year old girl (I'll be 15 soon) and I do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and I do a lot of stand up fighting also.

Try talking to your parents or an older sibling you trust about your dreams.  What you're doing sounds pretty good.  Try running a couple times a week and lifting at a gym near your house if you're not already.  Be sure that you have good fighting cardio and not just good running endurance.  Work some punches at home to build the endurance there.  Jumproping is good for footwork too.  Try both feet, one foot, the other foot, etc.

And...always listen to your coach!  They know what they are doing and will help you get into top physical condition to be the best fighter you can be!

If you're afraid of being teased because you are more of a bookworm type, don't worry.  I got a lot of teasing when I first started training because I am small and a girl.  But I never let it bother me or stop me from persuing my dreams of being an amazing fighter.  Just ignore what others say...most people respect those who follow what they believe in.

    Good luck and Have fun!!!

  2. Hi,

I hope I can give you advice to help you.  First off, your goal is an excellent one and I hope your family and friends will support you.  To reach your goal, the first step would be to find a good boxing gym with a trustworthy coach.  I don't know where you are located but you can find recreation centers and police athletic leagues in a lot of areas.

Here are some pieces of advice that I will give you:

1 - Learn the basics.  Be patient.  Boxing truly is the Sweet Science.  What looks on TV like "2 guys punching each other" really has a lot of technique like blocking punches, slipping, countering, footwork, how to set up punches, etc.  Listen to your trainer and show him respect.

2 - Work Hard!!!  Do your roadwork (jogging), and your excercises like pushups, situps, pull ups, etc.  Make your body strong.  In boxing, you won't be lifting a lot of weights.  You don't want to be overly muscular.  That makes you heavier and it restricts your movements.  Bigger muscles also require more oxygen so you will tend to get tired faster.

3 - Mental Preparation.  You will be nervous.  That is natural and that is normal.  Like the legendary trainer Cus D'mato would say "The Hero and the Coward both feel the same thing.  They are both scared.  It is what the hero does that makes him a hero.  And what the coward doesn't do that makes him a coward."

I hope this helps you out.  Best of luck to you!!!

  3. why don't you talk to your parents or someone older you respect.  they could probably give you some good advice.  so far i think what you are doing is great.  you can  probably do some training at home- you need to learn speed and dexterity and how to anticipate your opponents. keep in mind that you are still very young, in time your muscles will come in full and you'll need to keep that agility.  good luck!
