  1. Only take on the plane what you really need. Maybe a book, ipod, handheld video game. Also depends on how long your flight is.

You can check almost anything as long as if it's something of concern you declare it's in there.

Also don't take a lot of loose change in your carry on as sometimes they will hassle you about it. It's hit or miss...

I fly from Tokyo to NYC a lot with kids and I pack super light for a carry on.

A few diapers, travel pack wipes, a sippy cup, and entertainment. Ipods and nintendo ds.

the lighter you pack the easier it will be.

You are allowed to take lighters on planes again, so if you smoke you can take your lighter.

nothing sharp, no nail clippers, no tweezers, scissors you know the obvious stuff.

  2. pretty much dont bring anything sharp on you or in your carry on, if you have shampoo or gel or any fluid in your carry on expect them to either toss it or look through it, and as far as what you cant have in your luggage just be smart about it try to just bring what you think your really gonna need

  3. In my experience, security at LAX is pretty forgiving about what you bring on; I was able to get my lighter on last time I was there. But that is in no way a guarantee you'll be treated the same.

Carry on is pretty standard. All liquids must be in 3oz containers at the most and carried in a clear plastic freezer bag. No knives, cutting tools, etc., none of the obvious stuff. You will probably asked to take off your shoes and jacket going through security, so dress accordingly.

Your check-in luggage is much more forgiving, but not without restrictions. As long as you're traveling in America, you can carry pretty much anything. However, all weapons must be declared (If, for some reason, you're checking a handgun, or such). If you're bringing gifts, they should be unwrapped in your luggage, as TSA will open them if they're inspecting your luggage. Along those lines, if your luggage is lockable, you may want to leave it unlocked when you check it. If they can't unlock it, they *will* break the lock.

Delta's website also has some more info about what you can bring on and what you can check-in.

One last bit of advice is that you should be very polite to all the staff you deal with, both the front desk at Delta and the security people, even if they're being jerks. They're more likely to be lenient or help you out if you're not giving them trouble and this can make a big difference.
