I'm going to the snow. Do I need gaiters?

I've read some info that says I need them, some that says I don't. What kind of activities would I need them for? I'll be skiing, snowshoeing and hiking.

  1. Probably not for downhill skiing.

If you are going cross-country skiing, then yes.  Likewise for snowshoeing and hiking.

I also wear them when I climb mountains.

  2. Gaiters are for Gapers...look that one up in the Urban Dictionary.

  3. iv never worn gaters skiing - or infact seen anyone wear them. you need waterproof ski trousers - you'l prob end up on your knees and bum a few times so you need waterproofs to keep you dry and warm. most people use gaters when walking in muddy areas as they only keep the bottom of your trousers dry.

  4. The only people I ever see wearing gaiters while downhill skiing are also wearing rear-entry boots and jeans. Ski pants work much better.

I wear gaiters regularly while snowshoeing. If you have boots like those made by Sorel, you probably won't need gaiters either, but my boots are much lower. I've only worn them XC skiing when I was in the backcountry with deep snow.

I also use them when hiking on ground with loose scree or on very muddy trails.

Personally, unless you are going to use them often, I wouldn't worry about buying them.

  5. Yes for hiking

  6. If you are in groomed snow (all downhill areas, crosscountry areas where you pay) the snow is nicely packed so no need for gaiters. If you are breaking your own trail most likely the snow is deep and you want to keep it out of your boots. I have had melting snow wick down my socks and make the inside of my boots really wet! Wish I had worn gaiters that day.
