I'm gonna get Super Smash Brothers Brawl, can i only play against my friends?

In SSBB for the wii, and can you only play against people you've added as friends or can it chose random matches for you to play against other people?

You are able to choose world wide as an option.  You do not see who you are facing (name wise), but you are able to face random, anonymous, people from around the world.

For the multiplayer part of brawl you can fight your friends using the same wii at your house or online if they have the game. You also have another option to fight a random player but you don't see their name and they can't use tuants.
