Question:

I'm growing sunflowers. Do I prune them?

This is the first year I have attempted to grow a few sunflower plants in my backyard. Mostly it's a project for my son to watch them grow.

A few of them are more than 6 feet high now with 20+ flowers on them. My question is... Do I let it grow as big and high as it wants to? Or do I (can I) prune away some of the flowers and transplant them?

Any ideas here would be appreciated.

  1. em we r growing sunflowers tis year too and we allowed them to just grow as big as they could some reached well over six foot!!

but m nt sure if u can prune dem

  2. No, don't prune them, when their leaves become dead, just gently pick them off. Apart from that, just let them blossom and bloom!! Watering them regularly, but not too much!

  3. no you have to let them grow

  4. Sunflowers don't transplant well.  But you can prune at will as asthetics or physical confines dictate.

  5. Wow. They sound beautiful. The good news is you do not have to prune them, sunflowers are an amazing plant and actually don't need to give them much love at all. If I'm understanding your details correctly... Your flowers have more than one bloom on just one stalk? That's remarkable! You should enter into the county fair with those... Unfortunatley, they will not root if you are thinking of simply snipping the buds and trying to transplant like that. If you are meaning to maove the whole plant, I personally would not recommend it. They are so tall and very top-heavy, moving the flower risks breaking their stems. It sounds like you have some very nice plants and should probably leave them be for this year and then use what you learn to better plan your planting strategy for next year.

Did you know that sunflowers are used to take that toxins out of the ground? Factories and the government will plant a field of sunflowers where there has been a chemical spill, the flowers will actually grow and absorb the toxins soaked in the soil. Then they will harvest them and have them incenerated.
