Question:

I'm having a house party - worried about police?

What can I do to keep them away. We have started to warn the neighbors already - and are going to tell as many of the surrounding houses as possible. I am having everyone use the front garden which can be seen in to - music will be quite loud but we have promised neighbors that the music will be turned down slightly and doors and windows will be locked and 1am (it's pretty sound proof, just the bass can be heard). I should have around 40 people there...hopefully less. Do you think it will be ok? What other precautions should I take? I'm so worried. I've never had a house party before.

  1. Are you telling the neighbours or asking them?

Sounds to me like you are telling them that they won't get to sleep until at least 1am.

Stuff that.... I would be phoning the environmental health dept and asking that immediate action be taken. Usually that means the sound equipment being confiscated.

  2. The police don't deal with noise complaints anymore, its dealt with by the enviromental dept. (noise Pollution). just watch none of your belongings go missing when you have these sort of partys.

  3. "The music will be turned down slightly" at 1 am???? You are totally going to get the police called on you. Just hope you don't get a ticket!

My next door neighbor's college age daughter always has loud parties on weeknights during the summer - but the rest of us are working during the week, or have kids that want to sleep on the weekend nights!

My hubby calls the cops every time. They just show up and make them shut off the music.

  4. dont worry too much if the police do come they wont arrest you or anything, they'll just say "weve had a complaint about the noise could you turn the music down a bit" just turn it down a bit and nothing more will be said.

  5. It's the Environmental Health Department at your local Council that deals with noise and they have the right to confiscate the sound equipment. A neighbour could still complain even if they say it's ok to your face. I would be a bit careful. as 1 a.m. could be considered a bit late.

  6. If you dont break the law then you have nothing to worry about.

  7. I commend your responsible approach to this.  You obviously have a lot more respect for people than some do.

I would suggest that the only thing you can do to keep the Police away is not let things get out of hand.  Make sure your guests are those that you've invited and not gate crashers and make sure that those that are present are well behaved.

If anyone is not behaving, you are within your rights to ask them to leave.

Good luck with it and keep it sensible!

  8. Hey,

You have been considerate in warning the neigbours, which is good.

However, i must remind you that laws exist in Britain concerning noise pollution. These state that before 8am in the morning and after 11pm in the evening, noise must be kept to a minimum. It is therefore a criminal offence to play music loud enough for other people to hear it in their houses, so i advise that the party be moved inside just before 11pm to avoid any intervention from police.

If neighbours feel the noise is unreasnoble, even after being warned, they may report it to the police, in which case they will investigate.

The only way you can stop it is to be considerate, make sure you're guests are considerate, try and keep everyone contained on your property (don't let people walk around all over the street and down the road drunk or disorderly).

I would perhaps advise that you base the party inside, or at least in the back garden, because then this will ensure that people are less likely to stray onto other peoples property or onto council property (public roads/footpaths)

  9. Well we had a few pretty big parties (200+), didn't inform the neighbours and were using 2kW subs (which are insanely loud, considering your avrage CD player is 4W) and the police never raided our party despite the fact we live in a drug hot-spot, they did check the sound levels or something a couple of times on the street though.

    You'll be fine ;)

  10. There is no actual need for your music to be so loud is there?

Everyone can hear it loud enough at  level that also lets the neighbours sleep?

I mean come on people do have to go to work in the morning you know?

What is wrong with locking the door at 10 or 11, basically if the music is too loud disturbing people, they are not going to give a rats *** that you told then in advance and they will call the police, and your sounds equiptment will be confiscated, you will prob get a warning and shut down.

Just use tact, common sense and respect for the other houses and it will be fine.

  11. If your neighbours are on board and they are happy that you will be making some noise then I don't think you have anything to worry about.  The only people who call the police about noisy parties are the neighbours.

Just make sure that if you promised to turn the noise down at a certain time, you do just that!  Or they will phone the police.
