My son is a very fussy eater. He loves tacos. So for his graduation open house I plan on having a taco bar, soft shell, hard shell, taco salads, chips & salsa, etc. I will also have fresh fruit and veggies and cake. My Mom thinks I need to also have like ham sandwiches, potato, salad & baked beans for the people that don't like tacos. I feeling is that is twice the work and twice the money. My son has gone to many functions and not ate because there was nothing that he liked, this is the food he likes and it's his party. What do you think?

  1. I say, it is your son's day!  He should have the things he likes...and, how many people don't like tacos anyway?  If you have a nice selection of fresh fruit and the option of making a salad, that sounds just fine!  If you have a crock pot or hot plate, have some beans or rice, but I wouldn't fret on that point.  There will be plenty of choices for everyone.

Congrats to your son too!  Tell him good job on graduating!

  2. It's your son's party, serve what he likes.

My one suggestion might be to have a veggie and cheese tray with some crackers and dip.

I have thrown too many parties in my day, if you try to please everyone it will cost you a fortune.

  3. I think it's fine to stick with taco themed stuff.  Very few people hate every ingredient in tacos.

Adding potato salad and baked beans doesn't go at all with the theme.  It's an odd mix.  I think your Mom is wrong about that.

You could maybe put out some crackers and cheese to munch on if people don't want to deal with a  taco.

  4. Hace plenty of nachos there some spicy cheese dip, taco meat, hard and soft shells, pico de gallo, lettuce, diced onions, ranch dressing (better than sour cream). Who won't find something to eat? If your really worried I suppose you can throw in a little more non-taco salad stuff like broccoli, raisins, and bacon bits. All the bases are covered then.

  5. I would add spanish rice, refried beans and guacamole.

  6. Something quick, easy and cheap--cook up some chicken without taco seasoning. People can still put that in soft and even hard tacos and still use the cheese and veggies from the tacos if they dont like the spice from tacos.

  7. Hmmm--- I see both of your points.  Maybe a cold cut platter and buns might be good for the folks who don't like tacos.  If your mother really feels like you need to go out with providing additional options, you can always ask her to help out!

  8. I would stick with the taco bar!  I think it's a great idea & people will find something to eat, even if they just make a salad out of the toppings.  I would also be sure to include chicken & beef filling options & beans & rice as side items.  For dessert, I would serve cinnamon tortillas or flan.

Here is an awesome website I found with lots of Mexican appetizer recipes http://www.mexicanmeals.net/mexican-reci...

Here's a flan recipe that is incredible.  My husband loves this so I usually make it every couple of months:

You will be able to stock up on party supplies with Cinco de Mayo right around the corner.  Hit up a party store like Party City on May 6th & you'll get great deals.

  9. That sounds awesome!  I wish I had that at my graduation party. What I would do is keep the theme of tacos but make sure you have three choices- beef, chicken, or veggie. I dont think you can go wrong with that. Plus, the guests are coming to celebrate your son's graduation- the food is a delicious bonus! And you are totally right when you say, "this is the food he likes and its his party".  Have fun!

  10. I am sorry but I agree with your mother.  Even though it is your sons party you still have to think of your other guests.  I am sure there may be some older guests who maybe can't handle the spicy Mexican food and young children who won't eat it.  I don't think you have to have a whole other meal, but add a couple things to  your menu that most everyone will enjoy.  Ex. deli meat tray and rolls and maybe just a potato or macaroni salad and that should be enough.  This way everyone should be satisfied and everyone shoul have fun....

  11. just keep what you have planned, no offense but if your mom wants that other stuff she can bring it to the party herself. i would also let everyone know that's what you plan on preparing so they know to eat before hand if they dont like that.

  12. I would stick to the taco bar. Having all that other stuff is to much work and money.

I do not think I have met a kid yet who didn't like tacos.

  13. Well, I would probably keep the tacos. But toss the sandwiches, potato salad, and baked beans. I would just warn all the guests ahead of time that you will be having tacos. So If they don't like tacos, they can bring some of their own stuff, so they can prepare ahead of time! That's what happened at my cousin's Graduation.

    Hope I helped!

    :)

  14. if they know ahead of time it's a taco bar they should be prepared for it.  If you have some different options to add to the taco then you should be fine.  If they don't like tacos they can put the fillings on a plate.

  15. Stay with the taco bar..just add some salad dressing so they can make a salad with the lettuce tomato onions and avocado.

  16. Here's a compromise:  Have beef AND chicken fillings available for the tacos!  Those that don't like tacos, can just eat the filling! .....  Otherwise, you have plenty and it's HIS party.......

  17. NO!! If you dont like tacos you dont have to eat!  FOR GOD SAKE, I think that is just an insane request.  Keep tacos, people love them,  with the veggies and fruit AND cake!! that will be plenty!!!  Like the other person said you could add rice if you wanted....BUT THATS IT!!!
