And its impacted horizontally meaning its crown is pushing against the rest of the teeth that are upright beneath the gum line.

Could anyone tell me what the procedure is to have it removed? (I know the gum line must be cut) And how bad is the pain afterwards?

By the way, i will be conscious and numbed during the procedure. Not unconscious.

  1. Sometimes it is necessary to split large teeth then extract the pieces.

This may be the easy option.

I'm not sure if this method will apply if you are conscious.

Pain depends on your tolerance but will be controlled with analgesics.

  2. Had mine out and needed three stitches, took two paracetamol when I got home and had no pain, used salt water to gargle with. I am scared of the dentist, I know its silly. I really had no problems, you will be okay

  3. The pain afterwards is worse !  But you can take painkillers for that.

  4. Ironic, isn't it?  I have two horizontal wisdom teeth and the dentist showed me the X-Rays.  OK at the moment and as I'm over 65, I'm letting sleeping dogs lie!

  5. the pain is not so bad compared with other dental problems.  if you get only one tooth out then it is not big deal.  the procedure is simple. you get medicated with painkillers and local anaesthetic and then the gums are cut and the tooth extracted. if the tooth is well attached to the jaw bone then it may require some extra encouragement.  afterwords it hurts for a few hours but not too bad.

  6. I had my two lower wisdom teeth out and both were impacted. I was given anesthesia, but was conscious. After you get enough anesthesia, you will not feel any pain. However, you will feel all the tugging and pulling of the dental instruments and the fingers of the dentist moving inside the mouth. This can be uncomfortable but not painful.

Some extractions can be done quickly and easily, while others are more complicated. If possible, see a dentist who is experienced in extracting teeth, rather than one who does mostly filling cavities. In very difficult extractions, it is advised to see an oral surgeon.

After the extraction, sometimes you are given a stitch or two to help seal up the gums where the tooth was extracted. This also is painless. Then the dentist will put some gauze in your mouth to help stop any bleeding. Usually after about 20-25 minutes, you can remove the gauze.

With some extractions, there may be a little bit of pain afterward. Usually, all you need is an aspirin or two to deal with the pain. In rare cases, you might have more pain, so the dentist will give you a prescription for Tylenol plus codeine phosphate, usually Tylenol 3. Besides removing any pain, it may make you drowsy. If possible, try to take it in the evening, in case you are so drowsy you want to sleep.

Hopefully, you don't smoke, since this will slow down the healing after the extraction.

I almost forgot, before the extraction, it can help to do some form of relaxation or meditation. Also, now that you know what to expect, you might want to imagine yourself feeling fine during the extraction. This stuff can be helpful but it ain't necessary. All you really need to do is to get the anesthesia, and sit back and let the dentist do all the work.

  7. i had all 4 out at once-2 were impacted (i was asleep though) the pain wasn't that bad at all and i had no swelling/bruising

  8. I have had all my wisdom teeth out. All at different times. There was no room for them to grow. The top 2 came out fine but the bottom 2 were a bit more awkward. One I had to have packed as there was a large hole, they use this seaweed type stuff, it tastes a bit weird. The last one I had to have the gum cut, the tooth pulled and then stitched. It hurts for a while when the anaesthetic wears off but nothing paracetamol can't cope with. You may get some bleeding for a few hours 2-3, I found this the worst bit as I hate the taste of blood.

All in all it is not a bad procedure, there are much worse. Please do not worry.

  9. i had all 4 out just with being numbed it was fine just took painkillers
