I'm having my baby at a friend's house because I live in the middle of nowhere...?

We are planning a homebirth with a certified nurse-midwife, but my house more than an hour away from town (i.e. hospital, in case of an emergency) so my best friend is letting us have the birth at her place. Provided everything goes well, how long do you think it will be after the birth before I feel like driving home? (Well, my husband would be the one doing the actual driving.) Since we're doing sort of a modified homebirth there really isn't a set timeline.

  1. as soon as the midwife gos home

  2. Actually its not YOU that would be a problem. The baby would be the concern. Its recommended that a baby not be placed in a carseat until 48 hrs after birth, babies tend to destat in carseats. That means blood pressure drops and they hold there breath. You may want to ask your babies future peditrican.

Also your midwife should have explained after even a modified home birth a lot of new moms and baby DO still have to be admitted to the hospital. That is why your midwife has to alert the hospital that your doing a home birth. If she didn't she would be inprisioned for child endangerment. She doesnt have the equipment or knowledge to rescue a baby born not breathing OR a baby with cord problems.

Make sure that all steps have been taken to ensure your newborns safety.

Yep, so to answer your Q, once the childs peditrican has come to look the baby over, the Social Security and birth certificate process has been completed your legally able to move the baby from point A to point B. Its against the law to move baby without identification, especially in CA and FL due to black market human smuggeling.

  3. If everything goes smoothly, I'd say a few hours.  That's if you are healthy and all.

  4. 3 to 4 days

  5. If every thing goes well I would say with in a few hours after the birth that's what most mid-wife birthing centers do Good Luck .

  6. As soon as you feel well enough. For some women, that's a few hours (a friend of mine went home only 5 hours after she had her baby), for others it may be a day or two. I'd say, make yourself ready for up to 3 days, but you may want to go home right away, after a nap or the next day.

  7. It's hard to say and depends a great deal on how fit and healthy you are BEFORE the birth as well as how the birth goes. You could feel fantastic and be up running around in 12 hours (I was feeling great 12 hours after my son's birth, walking around with no problems and no one could tell I had given birth EXCEPT for my huge tummy LOL). Or you could feel horrible and exhausted and want to rest for a few days.

There is an amazing period of endorphin rush and blissfullness that happens right after your birth. What I would worry about MUCH MORE ... is getting a brand new hours old baby into a car seat and driving him or her home. Not sure that is the best idea ...

  8. a couple of days

  9. if everything is fine and healthy, go home right then....if u're feeling pain or exhausted, u may sleep over with the baby and maybe for few days before u can feel get up and go home. And if the baby is all good too! good luck!

  10. My sister-in-law came home from the hospital six hours after she had her first, and went to lunch at her mother's house.

I came home six DAYS after I had my first (by emergency C-section). I don't think I went anywhere at all for another four or five days after that.

What I'm trying to say is that there is no way you can tell beforehand. Please don't try to set yourself up any sort of schedule for it - it's far too likely to not work out that way.
