  1. In order to get an HD picture you need either an HDMI cable or component cable depending on the box you have. Assuming your HD box has an HDMI output, you plug the HDMI cable between it and the HDMI input on your tv. You must always then set your tv to that HDMI input to watch cable. Many people assume that since they have an HD box that they will receive HD channels through the RF cable the way they have always watched tv. To get the audio from cable you need to  1. plug an optical cable from the cable box to the receiver's optical INPUT or 2. plug an rca type cable (coax red and white) from the back of the cable box into the audio INPUT of your receiver. Of course you will need to set the input of the receiver to the appropriated input. As for your colour problem there can be a number of causes. Check in the menu of your dvd player to see if it has colour controls or RGB controls. If so make sure they are off or on zero or in their middle positions etc. You want them disengaged. If everything there is OK, then are you currently using a component cable for you dvd source? The component cable is a set of 3 coloured cables RED GREEN BLUE. Make sure they are all tightly plugged into there corresponding jacks.Sometimes if one or more are loose you will lose one or two primary colours i.e. reds or blues or greens. Hope this helps and feel free to message further for clarification.

  2. If you are hooking up with component cables, than you might have some faulty cables.  Check that connection before you do anything else.

HDMI is always a great option because it is one cable that takes the place of 5, and it is a purely digital cable.  If your televison and components support it, you should think about using that connection.  In the simplest terms, its the way of the future.

To get the audio in surround from your cable box, you need to hook it ino your surround sound system by using a digital optical cable, or a digital coax cable.
