I need help with adding and subtracting fractions. My problem is sort of a different one ive never practiced before. It is---

10 1/2+ 4 2/9----The problem is that when i'm trying to make the denominators the same. the 2 and 9

whenever u have a problem like this u always multiply the two denominators by each other, in this case 2x9=18 then multiply the numerators like u did too the denominator 1x9=9 then 2x2=4. So now answer the question 10 9/18 + 4 4/18=14 13/18

Easy!  multiply 2 times 9 and get 18 you will aslo multiply 9 times 1 to get 9 and 2 times 2 to get 4 then simply add the  rusults.  now add those rusults to get 13/18 ok?

So change 10 1/2 to 10 9/18, and 4 2/9 to 4 4/18

the common denomenator would be 18.that is the first number that they have in common.  so for instances 1/2 of 18 is 9/18's and 2/9's of 18 would be 4/18's. i think i did that right .. so the answer would 10 9/18 + 4 4/18='s 14 and 13/18's.

making the denominators the same is called Lowest Common denominator (LCD)

This is the number that both numbers can divide into to make a decimal number ie: 4 not 4.56

In this case it is 18 because 2/18 = 9 and 9/18=2

U have to do to the top what you do to the bottom

so:   1x 9 = 9 you get ( 10 9/18)

and: 2x2=4  you get ( 4 4/18)

now add:     10 9/18 + 4 4/18 =         (10+4)  & ( 9+4)

you get                             14 13/18
