I'm putting a piece of 2x4 on the wall and haveing trouble. I've used sqrew in anchors, and tougles, but still haveing trouble. Part of the problem is that it's an old apartment, and it's in the washroom so the drywall is brittle.

  1. if there's baseboard in the room, check to see if you can see nails in the board in a 16 inch or two foot pattern. Thats one way to find a stud pattern. If not, measure 16 and 24 inches from both corners and make tiny pencil marks about 4 feet off the floor and try driving a very small nail at the marks to see if you find a stud. Good luck.

  2. How old is the washroom in years and are you the original owner?  Some older places have sheet rock over slat boards which can make it difficult to find 2x4s.  Also some older houses have boards spaced 14, and 16" apart due to pipes.  s***w into the studs when you find them.

  3. Go to your local lowes or home depot and get some anchors made by Cobra called walldrillers. They work great in old or new drywall and plaster. Depending on what you are hanging is what size anchor to buy. In plaster, if the hole calls for a 1/4 predrilled hole use a 5/16 bit for little larger hole so you do not destroy the anchor. Buy s***w long enough to use on the 2x4. if you cant find the studs. ALL DEPEND ON HOW MUCH WEIGHT YOU ARE HANGING ON IT.

  4. don't you think you should buy it dinner first??

you need to drill into the studs. don't use dry wall anchors and screws with something heavy like a 2 x 4. get some long woods screws. 4" should be fine. then get a stud finder you can pick them up for around $10 at almost any retail/hardware store. follow the instructions, find the stud and drill through the 2 x 4 and into the stud.

  5. try finding a stud and s******g the 2x4 into the studs.  they should be spaced every 16 inches
