Question:

I'm homeschooling the last of sophmore year, will it look bad when I apply to college?

I got taken out of school for the last quarter of school...I had good grades and all. I'm not going back, but I will be attending an online school next year.

But I don't know if colleges would think that I quit because I can't stick with programs. Which isn't the case at all. I know they want students that actually stay, not quit. Would colleges still accept me?

Thanks.

  1. There is more to this story than you are telling us. What do you mean, you were "taken" out of school? Just being homeschooled will not look bad, but the fact that you didn't complete the year might look bad. At the very least colleges will ask you to explain what happened, and your answer may put them off.

  2. Not if you can do the work.

Prove yourself by studying to the best of your ability every day.

Become a person that can think for yourself!  Homeschooling will give you every opportunity to learn and to be able to express your own thoughts.

Seek truth and stick with it.  If you find people that you respect and admire for their courage and moral strength do what you can to be like them.

Colleges are looking for students that are willing to study and do the work.

  3. Why worry?

If you don't get into a college of your choice when the time comes around--you can always go to community college for two years and save tons of bucks!!!!!!    I have met the greatest friends at community college.   If you get good grades you can transfer to a 4 year college.

I know a young girl, third in her graduating class, all sorts of volunteer and extracurricular activities on her app. who applied to all the Ivy league colleges, because that has been her dream.   She did not get picked by any!   Became so depressed she had to take a year off!

Good luck to you, I am glad your thinking about college.  Sometimes it's just nice to take a year off high school and work and find out who you really are before you decide what to study at college.

  4. no it will accualy look better

  5. Yes, because you didn't quit school. You didn't drop out. You just switched to homeschooling which often colleges think quite highly of. Top notch universities accept a very high percentage of homeschoolers that apply each year, sometimes over public schoolers. The most selective universities even actively seek out and recruit homeschoolers because of their independence, self-motivation, social and academic maturity, and well-roundedness.

  6. no it will look better because actually home schoolers learn more than people who go to a school

i am sure colleges will accept you

  7. Colleges do seek out homeschoolers, so just the fact that you're attending an online school will not hold you back.

You said that you have trouble sticking to any one program.  I don't see this as a problem with you, but with the programs.  Many people make their own curriculum, and do very well.  Do some research on homeschool in your state, and join an online group of homeschoolers with similar interests or real-life group of homeschoolers in your area.  You and your parents will probably find a lot of great ideas that work for you to either supplement your online school, or replace it altogether.

Remember that when colleges look at your homeschool career, they will not *just* be looking at a transcript of grades, but a collection of your experiences and accomplishments.  You can probably find info on what colleges look for in homeschoolers in general, or if you already have a preferred school you can find out what they specifically look for in homeschoolers.  Then you would be able to 1) ease your fears about homeschool and colleges, 2) seek out opportunities to meet and exceed the expectations of the colleges.
