  1. you have alot more luck once you get backinto the 1800's, information is a little more protected after then.   first try a google search. try familysearch.com, it's free and they have alot of records, but again, much easier once you get to 1800's  your local library probably also has a genealogy section, or a microfiche of newspapers.  if you can find an obituary it should give fathers name, then you'd be in the 1800's.  if you're more serious get a subscription to ancestry.com, they are a great source, and you can fit a package of information to your needs, and you can buy just 1 month if you want.  cyndi's list is a free genealogy source list, lots of stuff.  good luck!

  2. Name:  Grover L. Lane

Last Residence: 63821  Arbyrd, Dunklin, Missouri, United States of America

    Born: 18 Sep 1911

    Died: 8 Aug 1992

State (Year) SSN issued: Missouri (Before 1951 )

the above is from the social security death index.. Dunklin is where he was living in 1920 census, with Thomas Gunner who is his UNCLE> meaning<  Thomas may have been a brother to Grover's mom, or he might have been a brother in law to Grover's dad.  Thomas is widowed.. and the indication is that Grover's parents are also dead, before him.

With the social sec file (use the search at rootsweb.com), you can get Grover's ss#, and send for his file for about $27. It should include his personal info, given when he applied. The other option is his death cert from Missouri.

Not sure about the impressed part.. this is standard everyday stuff over here.  *smile*

    edit-

with two Grover Lanes (there actually are 16 in the ssdi), it becomes even MORE critical to obtain verification with other records.  IF you have 'your' Grover's known date of death, you can compare to the file showing a date of birth as Sept 1911.   I do not find either one to have a WW2 draft card (does not mean none exists, just did not find) to compare.

Your matching records to locate his date of birth will be critical.. if Sept 1911 is accurate, he will not be in the 1910 census.

  3. Census records usually work the best for finding out parents names, sometimes you luck out when a grandmother lives with the family which tells you the mother's maiden name., then you just keep working your way back. The only census records that are available for free for the US are 1880.  I have access to ancestry.com, so I've copied some census records for you.

Online Military or  Birth/Marriage/Death records can also help to find out birth dates and parents names, but that depends on which State you are searching in, you may have to order the record from the State Vital Records Department.

Here is what I found when I searched Grover Oliver Lane:

There are quite a few Grover Lanes, but this one came up at result #20 George "O" caught my eye so I checked the original.

**1910 US Federal Census St Louis Ward 15, St Louis MO

Name: George O Lane [*Note: transcription error - original shows GROVER O. LANE]

Age in 1910: 0 [under 1 year]  Birthplace: Missouri

    House Address:  2922 Christian Ave.

Household Members: Name /Age /Birth Place

Grover C Lane /25  /b. MO (Parents b. TN - Occupation: Fireman married to Sarah 4 yrs)

Sarah E Lane /29  /b. MO (Father b. Eng, Mother b. Scot. Has had 4 children all living)

    Loreta E Lane /2  /MO

    George O Lane /0  /MO [**GROVER O. on original]

This one was easy to find knowing Grover Oliver's father matched "G.C."

**1920 US Federal Census St Louis Ward 16, St Louis MO

Name: OLIVER LANE b. abt 1911 Able to read/write: Yes

    House Address:  3660 Laclede Ave.

    Household Members: Name Age

    G C Lane 35  (widow)

    Margarite Emerick 24  (b. MO married, GC's stepdaughter-must be from Sarah's 1st marriage, father b.TN, mother b.MO)

    Loretta Lane 12

    Oliver Lane 9

So now I searched Grover C Lane and found this:

**World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918

    Name: Grover Cleveland Lane

St Louis   St Louis Co.,  Missouri

    Birth Date: 28 Aug 1884

Race: White  Roll: 1683744  DraftBoard: 7

The original image shows occupation as Fireman, address 911 14th St., next of kin shows Grover Oliver Lane but its crossed out and replaced with Miss Mattie Thompson-don't who this is.

So now I know Grover Oliver's father's middle name and searched "Grover Cleveland Lane" .  There are more than one, but this one is in St Louis, his birthplace is Tennessee and the surname Thompson was noted in his draft card as next of kin

**1900 US Federal Census St Louis Ward 24, St Louis MO

Name: CLEVELAND LANE b. abt 1885 TN

    Birthplace: Tennessee

    Relationship to head-of-house: Stepson

    Mother's Name: Ema M

    Household Members: Name Age

James Thompsen 39  (b. Oct 1860 KY Occupation Contactor, married to Ema M 8 yrs)

    Ema M Thompsen 38  (b Mar 1862 TN Father b. TN, Mother b. PA , has had 5 children 3 are living)

Cleveland Lane 15   (b. Aug 1884 TN Father b. AL, Mother b. TN, Occupation: Teamster)

Willie Lane 13  (b. May 1887 TN Father b. AL, Mother b. TN, Occupation: Messenger)

    James O Thompsen 6 (b. Oct 1893 MO)

So now we know who that Ema M or Mattie Thompson is Grover C's mother, so I searched "Mattie Thompson"

and found Grover Oliver Lane (printed as Oliver J) is living at his Uncle's (his father's half-brother) home along  with another Uncle and Aunt, his Grandmother (Mattie) and Great Grandmother - I love these ones. Turner is probably Mattie's maiden name)

    **1930 US Federal Census

Name: Oliver J Lane b. abt 1910  MO

Relation to Head of House: Nephew

Household  Name /Age -Relation to Head Place of birth/ father's place of birth/mother's place of birth (other)

James O Thompson 32 -Head MO/TN/TN (single, Chauffeur -Bus Co.)

Mattie Thompson 70-Mother  TN /VA/PA (widow, 1st married age 22)

    Rollo P Thompson 29-Brother  MO/TN/TN (1st married at 28, Billing Clerk -Railroad)

    Marie Thompson 24-Sister-In-Law  MO/MO/MO (1st married at 22 -Operator-Box Co.)

    Mary J Turner 90 -Grandmother PA/PA/PA (widow, 1st married at 18)

    Dorothy Patterson 4 -Boarder MO/MO/MO

    Oliver J Lane 20-Nephew MO/TN/MO (single, Delivery Clerk-Grocery Store)

So now I have searched "Grover Lane" (which is nice it includes both father and son) under marriage birth and death records and had no luck on ancestry.com, but  this is what I got from the Missouri Secretary of State Archjives .........

Wow! an online image of Grover C Lane's original death certificate.  This is rare.  With this death certificate, you now have Grover C's father's name, his mother's maiden name and the name of the city where he was born as well as his birth and death date, his address, cemetery, and cause of death
