Question:

I'm in quite a bad situation?

I often feel down about the uni that I’m going to. The university has a pretty poor reputation, especially for the subject that I’m doing. Sometimes I’m even embarrassed to admit which uni.

I didn’t think about reputation when applying to uni, I was never really thought about such things. Basically what happened, is that I went to the interview and open day and liked what I saw. It wasn’t until later, that I discovered the poor image it has.

And it gets worse, The subject that I’m doing, is hardly taught by the uni. The classes are less than 10 students and as result the uni doesn’t have any links with companies for work experience or employment after uni. So, it’s going to be hard finding a job after gradation.

I do feel proud that at least I didn’t drop out of uni, and I’ve stuck at it which I think does show my commitment. I’ll be in my second year soon, and I think if I try really hard, I should be able to achieve a 2:1 which is good for any graduate.

Anyways, I just feel like I need to get that off my chest, any reassuring words will be warmly welcomed. What do you think about my situation?

  1. The thing about college is to stick with it. If this university is not right for you, transfer!

  2. I have a statistic for you. Liverpool Hope University is officially the worst University in the UK according to the Times online good university guide. However it also has the very highest employment prospects (i.e amount of students who get a job in the first year of gaining their degree) with 98.4%. Says it all really :-)

  3. Honestly, the reputation doesn't matter.

You've done well in your first year, right?

Don't worry about what others think, if you do that all throughout your life, you will end up being an insecure mess who worries about going out in case they are judged in one way or another.

    What course are you doing?

It is actually quite easy to find work experience when you are at university. My university sets up placements (I'm doing a teaching degree) for me, I would actually prefer to do them myself.

I'm not really sure what reputation the university I go to has, I don't really care!

Once you have graduated, you can apply for various jobs with your degree, even if the university sets you up with companies or not, the interview and work is all down to you - not the university.

I went to a secondary school with a very bad reputation, the area I lived in wasn't much better, but stay out of trouble, do your best, take time to study by yourself from books if necessary and you will do well.

    Good luck with the degree.

  4. A lot of companies do not care one little bit which university that you have been to. What they are looking for in a potential employee is commitment.

The completion of a degree to a good standard, in any subject at university demonstrates that you have the commitment to begin something and follow it through to completion.

This is an admirable quality and one that will stand you in good stead when you finish your course and move on to employment.

Within a couple of years of leaving university no one will ask you which university you went to but only that you went to university in the first place.

Stick with it and you will be fine, believe me as I was in the same situation as you. I left university not knowing what to do with my degree and now I own my own company with factories in the UK and Malaysia. You are exactly the type of person that I always look for when employing new staff.
