Question:

I'm in the UK and want both a landline connection and broadband. Is BT the only option?

I rented a flat and my landlord said I could have broadband and just have to call BT. Now I was wondering, as there are so many providers on the market, do I have to contact BT at first anyway, so they can set up everything (I can't plug my phone or cable in yet), and still choose a different provider for phone calls and broadband, or can I do it without involving BT? There are a lot of cheaper deals then theirs.

  1. no

you can try TalkTalk. it's from the Carphonewarehouse...

  2. Talktalk provide you with free landline calls to UK and many other countries 24 hrs a day, plus broadband plus line rental all in one payment. Been with them for 18 months, been great, no problems whatsoever.

  3. no....... y dont u try virgin media....

  4. yes and no

yes, because you have to have a BT line rental, which costs 13 pounds per month, but you are then free to choose the service provider..

Sky, Virgin Media, Talk Talk does something..

  5. no there are plenty of companies that offer adsl broadband.

  6. i was looking into this a few weeks ago.there are other phone providers, but i cant remember their names (not very useful.. sorry!)  anyway, bt was the best option for the phone anyway. i think it is £11 p month for the line rental, and any calls will be charged extra. you get free evening and weekend calls with bt too.

dont go with bt for broardband though. very expensive, and bad customer service. my partner spent hour on the phone trying to get technical support from them, to no avail. got off the phone, pressed the reset button, and fixed it himself!

i heard that tiscalli were good for internet

  7. Before you select BT go and have a talk with the Post Office.

They have no line rental charges and flat fees for both.

Broadbands great too..You will save money.

  8. Check if Virgin Media is available in your area, if so they have great deals if not you would need a bt or postoffice land line from there you can go with any internet provider you wish. The only problem is the further away from the exchange you are located the worse service you will get. If Virgin media is available they guarantee the service you subscribe to eg I was with BT for a 2mb broadband service which was slower than dial up with virgin it was right on the 2mb constantly

  9. no i get mine from tescos now they are much cheaper

  10. There are loads of providers, but most insist you have a BT line installed.  Some cable companies are able to connect their own telephone lines, so you might want to make contact with some of them.

Personally though the best service I have ever had has been with BT and I hear they also offer a good broadband service.  They also offer loads of free calls now too depending on the package you agree to - so it would be worth speaking with them too when you start making your enquiries.
