I'm interested in buying a kayak for use on flatwater rivers in the NJ area. Any suggestions?

I think the kind I should look for would fall under "recreational kayaks." Am I correct? Where can I find them for a cheap price? I'm on a limited budget trying to save up for a wedding. Are there any models sold for under $400 (not inflatable please)? And not ebay please, because most of them require pick up and this isn't something I'll be able to do. I want to surprise my fiance for his birthday with one and I need it delivered.

Have you looked at local garage sales?   Also, there should be some retailers in your area.  You may be able to get it, and have a friend bring it to you for your surprise.    Try the list of New Jersey canoe & kayak dealers below, and see what they have in their used boats inventory.  You should be able to get a basic boat for under $400.00

Boats like the Pungo Classic from Wilderness Systems are great for exploring flat water, and they're stable enough to fish from too.
