I have taken up backcountry skiing over the past couple of seasons, and am interested in expanding my skiing locations. I want to get a GPS device to help guide me. Does anyone have recommendations?

  2. The Garmin Colorado and the Magellan Tritons are very nice. I would get one with a rechargeable battery and take extras.

  3. I use a Garmin E-Trex. It's small and rubberized so it's durable and water resistant. It was also pretty cheap, around 100 bones.

The E-Trex is small enough to fit in a cell phone case attached to my pack, it's bright yellow so its easy to find, has a nice size display, and I've never had much of a problem using it with gloves.

I also carry Garmin Rinos to use the radio portion, in a pinch the GPS portion transmits, so someone with a similar GPS receiver can pin-point your location. Keep in mind for this to work you have to be transmitting, so it relys on you keying the mic occasionally, and the receiver must be in range. The controls are not good with gloved hands (except the radio function) and having two antennas it's awkward for pockets.
