  1. Last week we set up a test to try and prove/disprove the claims of those selling this HHO concept.

We took a small gasoline-powered generator and connected a 300W load.

100ml of fuel was carefully measured for each of three runs (this was without the HHO kit fitted).  The results of the three runs were averaged to produce a benchmark against which the other runs would be compared.

Then, the output of an electrolysis cell was then connected to the air-intake of the generator's engine and the cell was powered by a separate 12V battery not connected to the generator. Another three runs were made (using 100ml of fuel for each run) in this configuration.

The three runs in each case were averaged and they showed that the introduction of hydrogen produced a 2% improvement in fuel-efficiency.  ie: the generator ran 2% longer on the same amount of gasoline when hydrogen was introduced.

However, we then hooked the electrolysis cell up so that it was this time being powered by the generator itself and not an independent battery.  This is how the HHO systems you fit to your car are configured.  They use the car's alternator to provide the power to create the gas.

Another three runs using 100ml of gasoline each time were performed and the results averaged.

This time, the generator ran for 14% *less* time than when no hydrogen was used.

    Summary...

The addition of hydrogen did contribute to the combustion efficiency and the total thermal energy available but once the energy cost of producing that hydrogen was also taken into account, the overal system efficiency (ie: fuel-efficiency) was actually reduced.

Strangely enough, this is *exactly* what the laws of thermodynamics predict.

From this test, I can only conclude that a bunch of scammers with jam-jars are not telling the truth about their claims that these things will give you a "40% fuel saving" or even "double your mileage" and that instead, the centuries of good science that gave us the laws of thermodynamics are what we ought to be listening to.

    There you have it.

A film crew from the 60 Minutes TV show are coming to my workshop sometime in the next few weeks to  film a repeat of these tests and I'll be posting video and the test results on my website at interestingprojects.com when it's done.

My name is Simpson and in our house we obey the laws of thermodynamics.

  2. Forget it, it's a scam.  See link below.

  3. email me and I'll gladly send you photos of my HHO unit I recently installed in my car. No definitive results yet, as I am still testing. It does produce viable gas tho, as my photos will show you.

    Cheers

  4. My dad is building a biomass gasifier right now to be able to power a flour mill sustainably. These types of gasifiers only work well for stationary engines, though. Feed the fire with the hulls from the oats you have milled, then use the gasses created by the burning oats to power the mill. So far, the preliminary burns have gone well, he's just working on emissions yet, not whether or not it can be done. You can actually run a diesel engine (or gas, if configured properly) with only the tiniest spritz of diesel or gas to get it running. A few years ago, the savings over using electricity from the grid was $50,000 a year. That's gone up since, obviously...

  5. Well, I have 2 cars that run on natural gas (methane). They were made by Ford in 1999 and 2000. They don't use a drop of foreign oil. They run 99% cleaner than gasoline-powered cars and it costs me less than $10 to fill up. Check out my source below for info.
