I'm interested in working as a carer for the elderly. What skills/abilities/qualific... etc. will I need?

I worked in the human resources department of a nursing home for 8 years.  There are many opportunities for people who would like to care for the elderly.  Many jobs do require specific training (nurses, certified nurse aides, social workers, recreation &amp; art therapists, etc.)  But there are also jobs for people who do not have specific training.  Many therapeutic recreation departments hire activity aides to assist with the activities (bingo, art, music, reading, current events, pet visits).  

I suggest you volunteer at a local nursing home or senior center and see how you like the environment.  You can observe how things are done and get an idea of the different types of jobs available.  If you&#039;ve already done that and want to start applying, look up nursing homes on-line and check out the jobs they have posted.  You can also try the website idealist.org for available jobs.

Most states require youto go to school and receive a certificate.
