I've decided to join the military to pay for college. It's something I never thought I'd do but it sounds like a good option. I've been to the Army, Navy, and Airforce recruiters and I would like to know who YOU think is better and why. I'm still trying to decide.....

  1. Depends which force better suits your individual needs and interests. Research all the jobs each branch offers and see which you'd be happier doing and the service lengthes your prepared to commit to.

No one can tell you what's best for you besides yourself man. good luck.

  2. Here is what your should know:

    - Get a study guide to the ASVAB and do the practice tests

    - At MEPS, don't be swept into some MOS or rate you absolutely do not want, don't fall for the "You can cross rate after 18 month" - it is a bold face lie.

    - get in shape for boot camp.  Grow thick skin, you will hear some of the most nastiest insults in your entire life.

    - You can use Tuition assistance while on active duty.  You better do good in school, or you WILL be repaying it.  If they don't get the money from you willingly, they will take it ALL out of your paycheck.

    - Enjoy your time off.

    - Expect to live with and deal with some of the absolutely most obnoxious people you have ever met, there is usually 1 to 3 of them per command, and don't be that person.

    - Be prepare to meet people that do not like you for whatever reason.

    - Be friendly, be sincere, but don't be a push over and allow people to take advantage of you.

  5. I had this dilemma before. Every branch appealed to me for different reasons...... so here's what it comes down to.

College. That is the only thing you mentioned. I will share with you with the facts of each branch, and how they will accommodate your plans on education.

Research the lifestyle of all three branches. If you want a more relaxed atmosphere, 3 to 6 months deployments, that deals with technical missions - try Air Force. If you want a traditional type branch, that deploys for 6 to 9 months at a time on sea yet still technical - then try Navy. Want Army? You get faster promotions, big incentives, 18 month deployments, they are a ground force, a bit of camping out, and more of a HOOAH type atmosphere. You can do college while at sea, in Iraq, or in  your spare time when not drilling for one weekend a month in the Reserves. HOWEVER, remember in a combat zone - the last thing you will be doing is some college courses. This great mililtary purpose is to defend America at all times, and sometimes you have to put things on hold. If thats not a problem for you, then go for it!  If I were you, I'd make a list of goals that will be completed in the next 2 to 4 years. In contrast, see how the service will help you get there - with help of the facts I just given you.

What would I pick? ..... The Air Force Reserve. You will have more time to complete your degree (due to the conflicts in middle east). They also have their own community college. When you complete your degree, and decide to go active, then go for it! If you find that you want some HOOAH action, try the Air Force's program called "BLUE TO GREEN". It will transfer your enlistment to the Army.

I hope this helps you out with the big decision. Thank you for looking into serving our beautiful country. God bless and good luck!
