My first practice is tuesday morning and I really lost my endurance over the summer. I'm scared that i wont even make a mile and a half when I hear its like 3 miles. I don't want to look like the weakest. It's really to late to look back. I'm much more of a sprinter not a long term runner. Anyone have advice for the first day and what's going to happen?

  1. best advice well push ur body. ur body can go 30% further than ur mind tells u to let it go. but i bet ur going to be really tired. plus cross country is really about the kick @ then end. as long as u keep good pace and have a hard kick then u may stand a chance. have heart!

  2. i just joined cross country.

    &i am definetly a sprinter,

if you do xcountry you MUST not give up.

you absolutly have to push yourself.

everybody will respect you as long as you dont walk.

if you come in last, nobody says anything bad. everybody will cheer for you. dont worry about it. its lots of fun. so far we have run 6 miles every practice though. its tough but youll be in fantastic shape.

  3. haha don't worry I had the exact same feeling before I started cross country this week. I ran track and was more of a sprinter, but the coaches wanted me to also try cross country. I thought it was going to be AWFUL since I'm not the best for endurance. If your coaches are like mine, they'll be cautious and start out nice and easy. we did a nice slow jog for about 10 minutes to warm up. Then we did "interrupted runs" which is when we jog for about 10 minutes, take a water break for a couple minutes, and repeat that pattern 3 times. Maybe you'll do some weight workouts too, and of course stretching at the end. Don't worry about your mile time yet, just work on being consistent and positive. Good luck and have fun!

  4. Look at this way...the more mileage that you run during XC will give you more of a base for track season (since it sounds like you're a sprinter).  There's a saying in track (but in sports in general): "sprinters/athletes have to do the most (to get into and be in shape), in which they like the least, and that is run (to put in the mileage for your base)".

Don't just think of this as being XC but also as part of your track season!
