Question:

I'm just curious... Mothers on WIC and Medicaid?

I have insurance, and between my fiancee and I we'll be able to afford everything we'll need for the baby. But I'm just curious, because someone on here earlier was bashing WIC and Medicaid. What did they do for you? What kinds of services do they offer? I've never heard anything of either really, so I'm just curious.

Also, Please no lectures to me, because (as I stated) I won't need any government assistance. And I have no problem with people who seek it if they need it.

  1. WIC is Women Infants Children which provides food for them like peanut butter, formula, milk, cereal, etc

Medicaid is insurance for families that can't afford their own insurance.

I don't think there is anything wrong with people using this kind of assistance when they are going through some hard times but its when people become dependent on it and won't take the initiative to do whatever they have to to provide for themselves

  2. wic and medicaid is provided to so you can have a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby...medicaid will pay your medical bills and wic provides you things like milk eggs cheese juice while youre pregnant and once the baby is born it also provides similac or a breast pump if youre breastfeeding

  3. wic helps the mother get food before she has the baby and then the baby will get it for so  long.(milk, cereal, juice and other stuff like that)

Medicaid is where you don't have insurance and the government picks up the tab for the bills.

  4. I worked at a job with no health insurance, and my husband just started a new job.  Great timing on our end.  We were on Medicaid which covered all doctors bills and hospitals bills.  It covered our daughter for the first couple weeks until my husbands insurance picked her up.  As for WIC I know they cover formula but Im sure its only a certain amount, and you have to buy formula also, and they give you vouchers for things like cereal, milk, cheese, peanut butter and Im not sure what else.  You cant live off of WIC so women will still have to buy food.  I dont know why people get bashed for needing help, no one knows what happened in order for them to seek that help.  As long as people are not abusing the system and trying to live for free then good for them for admitting they need the help.

  5. WIC is very helpful. The price of formula is ridiculous. Its there to help the ppl that need the help (like myself).

I have medicaid for both my kids and had it while i was pregnant with my yougest child. It pays for any pregnancy related doctor visit (pregnancy only medicaid) regular medicaid covers all medical related doctors appointments that are neccesary.

  6. People bash it because they are ignorant.  Medicaid is simply medical insurance which every pregnant person needs but not all jobs offer of course.  WIC is a nutritional program for pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum mothers and children under 5.  It is really good for if you need to use formula since it is so expensive.  If I were you I would check into WIC just in case you qualify because although you think you can provide everything for your child, there are always those unexpected expenses and it would help a lot.  If you and your finace make more than 32,560/ yr then you wont qualify but if you dont then I would apply.

  7. WIC is a program that give mothers formula for the baby free. I don't see a problem with that at all. If a mother need to feed her child she should do whatever it takes. Tax money is being used for everything else thats unnecessary so why not feed a baby!!! i hate when people bash women for being on assistance if you have kids and need help thats what it is there for!!!

  8. We could have qualified, but we decided not to use it because we didn't want to be dependent on the government when we could afford to buy the things they provide like milk, cheese, formula, etc...

We thought that it was just one more person that could really need the extra finacial help that we'd take it from if we did it. So, we didn't.

  9. I was on Medicaid for my pregnancy. I got pregnant my last semester at college and when I graduated and lost my moms insurance. I either had to find a job right away that gave my insurance the day I started or go on Medicaid for insurance. I searched for a job and found none so I went on Medicaid. It is just for people who cant afford insurance (like me with college bills and my fiance still being in college). They basically paid for the whole pregnancy like prenatal car, the delivery, and my baby's health care after. If it wasnt for Medicaid I dont know what I would have done since I was broke from college and didnt have time to make money.

  10. When I first signed up for wic and medicaid I was three months pregnant, they gave me pregnancy medicaid. That covered all me pre- natal care, and anything dealing with the pregnancy, but if anything happend that didn't obtain to the baby (like if I broke my leg) it was not covered. Once I had her I no longer recieved medicaid, but she still  does. WIC on the otherhand while I was still pregnant they supplied me with milk, eggs, cheese, cereal, and juice. Once I had my baby they stopped giving me that and started giving me 8-10 cans of formula and 3 boxes of baby cereal each month.

  11. My husband and I are actually applying for WIC and for Healthy Start Families here. The reason we are doing it is because it takes somewhat of a financial burden off of us - we make a rather low income and have a lot of student loans to pay off so even the simplist things can become a burden.  For those wondering I am not a government moocher - we pay for what we can and pay all of our bills, it is just some extra support for some hard financial times. We pay taxes too you know.

WIC provides food for pregnant women, mothers and children. Typically peanut butter, beans, eggs, milk, formula ( if you use it), cheese and cereal.

Healthy Start covers all of the bills that our insurance wont cover (such as the 20% that we are required to pay and the $1,000 deductible).

  12. You can read the WIC food package here:

    http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/benefitsands...

In some states they offer vouchers for farmer's markets.  In some states they offer breast pumps, car seats.  I believe all offer nutritional counseling.  They also do a certain amount of checking on mom and baby's health but basically just through weight checks and a few iron screenings.  And like all social services they usually can and will assist you in getting the aid you need from other organizations.

  13. im on wic & i have a 3 month old babygirl. i receive 9 cans of formula a month for my baby. i also receive eggs, cheese, 5 1/2 gallons of milk, peanut butter, juice & cereal for my self since im bottle feeding and breastfeeding. it also depends on what state you live in, because sometimes you get carrots too. medicaid is good because you dont have tons of dr bills to pay. im also on medicaid. and i dont see a problem with a little help from the gov't !!
